Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?
Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.
We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes.

My advice for when someone is facing a challenge that seems insurmountable, is to never give up on yourself and take it one step at a time. Always put your best self forward and everything else besides that is out of your hands so dont worry about it. The saying hard work pays off is tried and true, dont let anything get you down.
Victoria Simone | Up and Coming Makeup Artist
I have faced any challenge that you can think of, and I know that Im not done facing them. With every battle that ive faced whether it be internal or with things that ive faced in my life, all of them have shown me that I am truly stronger than I think. i pray over any situation that is unsettling to my spirit, because when you give it over to God you have already won.
Dana Tadlock. Mother, Warrior, Storyteller
I’ve been through decades of tough times and low lows. Because of that, I have a fierce attitude when it comes to overcoming things in my own life. With that being said, the advice I’d give to a friend would be: Yeah, right now sucks but remember you climbed that mountain you never thought you’d climb? Did that thing no one thought you could do? Dried your eyes, got out of the bed and did all the shit you had to do even though all you wanted to do was curl up in a ball and die from a broken heart? We’ve all walked through times in our life where we thought we couldn’t do it. But here you are, on the other side of that mountain. You are strong. Chin up, shoulders back and fight through whatever it is because it is fleeting and you, you are a force to be reckoned with. You are not the cards you were dealt.

Georgia Moody – Handicapable Mother of 2, Small Business Owner
Having been diagnosed with many autoimmune diseases, Adult onset Muscular Dystrophy and the journey of multiple medical spinal device implants over 3 years. I have felt just life was insurmountable. Just starting your day off was insurmountable. Learning to walk all over again, insurmountable. Surviving opium withdrawals, absolutely an insurmountable task. Face each task with courage, determination, the drive for a better life. What ever that maybe. Look around and find your want. For me it was to be able to attend and daily life things with my family. All 7 of their faces, attitudes, laughter, playfulness and their ability to be my pesonal cheerleader. This was my drive, my determination, my courage and strength came through them. When the pain was unbearable, and the recovery was long. Life was insurmountable. Until I found my want, each one of us has that desire, lean on those around you, take in the good from those around you. Soon just breathing will not feel like an insurmountable task.

The best advice I would give someone in that situation would be to always remember that though challenges can make or break you , as long as you stay the course and have faith in the tasks you have set for yourself you will make it through.
