What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?

All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others.  At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more.  We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?

Sophia Nicole – Influencer

The best advice I’ve ever been given, is to never dampen your curiosity. So often, society tells us to follow the rules, go by the book, or trust the tried and true; while beneficial at times, the attitude of someone who is always wanting to understand and learn more is priceless. Digging for people’s why, understanding the reason things are in place, and even challenging those beliefs will not only add new perspectives to your life, but also make you a more empathetic individual

One brick at a time leads to the creation of a happy foundation”. Seeing the overall project that needs to be completed will only make you feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and frightened; all of which may lead you to stop chasing your dreams to begin with. So many people focus on what they want to achieve without caring for the process in which gets you there. Start zooming in on one brick instead of being so zoomed out with the end goal. Build a solid foundation and really invest in each step that gets you there. When you’re able to break it down to just one brick, you’re able to dedicate yourself with passion. You are no longer overwhelmed with the pressures of the whole wall. Repeat this everyday with a new brick and before you know it, you’ll look up and see a perfectly imperfect rooted foundation to your dreams, goals, and successes.

“Just be yourself”. Those three words are so simple yet hold so much meaning. Authenticity wins. Truth wins. In a world where everything is exposed through media I think its of upmost importance to be as authentic and free as possible. I have found the most success in my life came with letting go. This advice has carried with me and I know will open many door for my future. You don’t have to try and be something you are not. You are the best you and nobody else has that.

As far as the answer to your question, the best advice i’ve ever received personal or professional is, to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He Will direct your path.

Lacey Dunn, Registered Dietitian & Fitness Coach

The best piece of advice that I have ever received came from my grandmother, who told me to always follow my passions and to not let anyone stand in my way of making them happen. She said if God places a passion in your heart, it is there for a reason. Don’t let fear or worry be what holds you back from a plan that has a purpose.

The best professional advice I can give is no matter what position/pay you are in right now it is only temporary. Learn every aspect of your company. Acquire different skills. Being able to work in multiple departments makes you very valuable to the company. The best personal advice I can give is to travel. Every opportunity that you are giving take it. Say yes to experience and learn about the world. It is absolutely amazing!
