Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?
Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.
We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes

When I am faced with an insurmountable challenge I remind myself the only way is through it. Think step by step, day by day, just plant the seed, water it, tend it and while you may not notice the growth immediately you will over time. And that seed will provide the shade to all of your other ideas and ambitions.

Fear of failure, self-doubt, or fear of criticism hold so many people back from trying in the first place. Put your blinders on and put in the hours necessary! One step at a time.

My best advice to facing an unsurmountable challenge is to take a step back, breathe, have faith, and attack it from a different angle. There’s always a way, don’t give up!
Brittany Lee – Fashion Blogger and Owner of Harper Rae Boutique, an Online Women’s Boutique
For me personally, I always have to take a step back from the issue. I will start to focus on something else, even if its cleaning the house. Anything to let my mind focus on something else for a bit. Then, when I am ready, I will go back to the issue at hand. For some reason, coming back when I am relaxed and have spent time away allows me to be able to think in a new way. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. If this doesn’t work, I tend to ask my husband or my mother for advice on what they think. Having new opinions allows me to start opening my mind up to new possibilities and ideas. At the end of the day, I am going to try every option that I can to get my end result. Always remember to never give on your dreams and hard work does pay off! Believe in yourself, and you can do anything!
Emily Ann, Graphic Designer and Photographer
The best advice I can give someone, would be to stop doubting yourself. Even when you think you don’t got this, when the chips are down and you can’t make it happen, you absolutely got this and can! Always remember that you are capable of greatness, because if you don’t believe in yourself first, no one else will either.
Brooke Omachel – Cookier & Stay at Home Mom
My advice for someone facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable is to never give up, because you don’t know what the outcome is going to be. If you give up you’ll always wonder what if and I think that is worse than failing and learning from your mistakes. Because once you learn from your mistakes you can go back and achieve your goals.

Everyone has a story. Life isn’t a perfect piece of cake. The things that excite you are there for a reason even if it feels unreachable. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with people who pushes you and inspires you. Eventually, everything connects.
Karla Arjona- Houston Realtor
Believe in yourself first. Knowing that you are capable of doing anything makes a world of difference. I know this is hard, but if you work on it every day by asserting yourself and doing something like stand in front of your mirror every morning and saying, “ I am beautiful, I am capable of doing great things when I put my heart and my all into them” it works. You are your biggest cheerleader and your biggest bully. It’s up to you and no one else. Once you have that; then you just have to trust that you are capable of finding solutions to any problem you might have. Listen, give it your all, put your heart and soul into everything you do, and do not be afraid to do great things. Oh and surround yourself with people who lift you up and cheer for you.
Meagan McElya – Photographer & Story Teller
When faced with any challenge, first switch your mindset to focus on the opportunity rather than dwelling on the possibility of failing. If you make the decision to always see opportunity to grow and learn, you’ve already won.
