Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Nguyen.
Hi Wendy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from the University of Houston with a degree in Computer Information Systems at the end of 2019, I soon landed my first corporate job and was super excited to finally experience the “real world” until the pandemic surfaced early 2020.
Like many others at the beginning of quarantine, I went through different phases trying to find to keep sane, which included some of the viral quarantine trends (i.e. Dalgona coffee, TikTok dances, Animal Crossing, and you name it). Soon after, I noticed that many of my friends started to launch their own businesses, some as a side hustle and others as a main source of income due to lay-offs. I was fortunate enough to still have a full-time job, which made me realize that I should utilize this time to freshen up on old skills.
User interface/experience (UX/UI) and business development has always been something I’ve been passionate about since college. I always loved the capturing people’s ideas and the values they want to showcase to create something that tells their story, so I started with front-end development.
I reached out to a few friends and asked if they needed help in expanding their business aside from their social media accounts to help me practice web development, and they all agreed. One project led to another. And shortly afterwards, my favorite pastime became a growing business – WHN Web.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In the beginning, a lot of my time was spent on research and learning. I wanted to make sure I was using the best practices to deliver the best product I could, so I would often find myself down the rabbit hole of studying, watching YouTube videos, and taking online courses in the evenings after my full-time job.
Luckily with my technical background, I touched base on a variety of topics: business analysis, project management, basic security, and technical content writing, which helped me a lot in producing websites. The more I learned from new material and mistakes, the quicker and more efficiently I began to execute projects.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nowadays with the leading one-stop-shop website builders, individuals are misled with the idea that they’ll have to spend extra money to gain a larger audience or get more sales with convoluted jargon.
My work takes a user-centered approach through storytelling. I provide innovative, cost-efficient solutions that focus on an individual’s needs and the value they want to showcase through a collaborative partnership. Websites aren’t the only thing I do! I also work on wireframing/prototyping, graphic designing, technical writing, and photography. With every project, I break down the process of creating a solid online presence in non-technical terms while also highlighting the fundamentals of digital marketing. It’s important for individuals to understand how their content gets distributed across the internet and how it has the potential to do so much more.
Throughout this entire process, I’ve truly been blessed with the opportunity to work with talented, determined individuals that includes artists, entrepreneurs, and locals and bring their ideas to life, especially during a global crisis.
What are your plans for the future?
There’s still a lot I want to do, in terms of personal development such as certifications and training. Possibly even go back to school! And given recent events, the future won’t be about corporate jobs and 9-to-5s. I want to believe that when you “do what you love, success will follow”. Who knows? Maybe WHN Web can turn into a full-time remote operation, instead of side project.
