Given the unprecedented economic impact of the Covid-19 health crisis, we think it’s more important than ever to encourage our communities to support small businesses, mom-and-pops, independent artists, creatives and makers and help them bounce back strong.

Often people want to buy from and support local entrepreneurs and makers but don’t know how.  They might want to get in shape but don’t know how to learn about non-chain gym fitness options.  They might want family portraits but don’t know how to find the right photographer.  The Bounce Back Strong Campaign is about highlighting local businesses, creatives and makers, because learning about the local options is the first step someone can take towards supporting them.

Hey there! I’m Shelbie Morgan AKA Grub It Up. I came up with the name Grub It Up 8 years ago and created an Instagram account. As a college student who was navigating her early twenties, I had other things to focus on at the time. In fall 2018 I was ready and full of ideas to apply to Grub It Up and that is when I started to hyper-focus on my blog. Grub It Up now has an Instagram, Facebook page, YouTube channel for healthy recipes and reviews, a blog website, and most recently a full-fledged home-based vegan bakery Grub It Up LLC. My bakery has an online market, The Grub Shop where people can order delicious vegan baked goods for delivery or pickup. You can order vegan cinnamon powdered sugar donuts, vegan chocolate chip cookies, vegan banana bread, and vegan walnut chocolate chip brownies just to name a few. A little bit about me, I’ve been a foodie forever. I think food is the best way to bring people together and form a community. When I cook I do it with love and passion, and you can always taste those qualities with well-prepared dishes. For me, a lot of my love for food stems from trying new dishes in my own kitchen and going out exploring. I have an autoimmune disorder and living my best healthy life while still enjoying good food has been a huge motivation for me. It is honestly one of the reasons I started the food blog and then a vegan baking business. I want people to know where to go for great food that is good for you and how to cook it. Amid the pandemic, I got the idea to hyper-focus on my blog and expand the business model and provide healthy baked goods to people within the surrounding Houston area. I want people to not be limited by their health conditions, demographics, or background when it comes to enjoying healthy, tasty, and good food. Deborah Colton Gallery will present the dynamic multi-media exhibition, “Heroism is the Possibility of Believing in the Impossible,” a series of work by international artist, Amita Bhatt.

In this solo exhibition, Bhatt digs deep into world philosophies and mythologies to answer questions pertaining to our political as well as personal belief systems. Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist.

In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation myths claim chaos to be the central truth marking the beginnings of the world. Should turbulence then be viewed as essential to new beginnings? Bhatt’s characters are packed with irony, humor and indifference, and navigate intense color fields, all in search of wisdom and truth. They mirror the tumultuous times we live in, yet they know that there are deep Karmic mysteries that need to be understood and that HOPE in the end is what will sustain them.

The exhibition will remain on display through October 17. The installation and works can be seen through the gallery’s Viewing Room and their Virtual Slide Show Video on our website. They are also open during normal gallery hours of Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 am to 5:30 pm, and can arrange private appointments when requested.

Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.

The best advice I can give is to keep overcoming & to always create/discover a plan that works for you. Doesn’t even have to be a business plan just a plan for your life, a plan to create new ambitions you wish to one day accomplish, a plan to keep your mind in check to remind yourself to keep going then try to make a routine of that. Mental health is a major problem within my community and within society, it can get in your way a lot and make you feel as though you want to give up more often than normal. I think the best thing I did was go to therapy, but I know that isn’t a currently accessible option for most, especially in my community; though what I learned from my therapists I can pass down to others, and I came to something I felt really worked for me; come up with a plan to keep my mind in order and not in a rut. Stuff that normally makes me happy or motivated that I can continue to do and recollect. I really enjoy speaking my message and uplifting experiences into my music, so they could listen to that to overcome too, lol. I hope my suggestions can help someone in the near future.

Lolade Olowolayemo | CEO of Femme & Flora, Inc.

She holds a Bachelors degree in the study of  Human Health and Sociology from Emory University, and is a certifying holistic health coach and doula. She currently works as a nutritionist where she collaborates with her patients on their journey to treat chronic conditions.

Her interest in preventative health care was developed during her tenure as the Campus Director for the Resource and Insurance Navigator Group (RING). Lolade worked to improve health literacy for  members of the community and on campus by helping them navigate the health care enrollment process.

Her passion for health literacy and awareness carried into her work in the non-profit sector, where she collaborated with local municipalities to build equitable and accessible local food systems within community food deserts.

Lolade is led by a strong desire to help women maximize their potential by increasing awareness about uterine health conditions through education, prevention and service.
When she is not volunteering at a local community garden, you can find her leading nutrition education workshops, facilitating weekly exercise classes or developing health education material.

Meet the Chief Operating Officer of Femme & Flora, Professor/Chef Brittany Walker-Craig.  Chef Brittany has an Associates of Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts, an Associates of Applied Science degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management, a Bachelor of Science degree in Technical Management with a concentration in Hospitality Management, and a Master of Science in Nutrition Education.

With over 10 years of culinary experience, Chef Brittany is the former owner and executive chef of Cajun Moon – The Restaurant and the former owner of BPW Enterprise where she worked as a Nutrition Educator servicing clients with Cancer, Diabetes, Diverticulitis, Heart Disease & Lupus which aided in his/her recovery with properly planning nutritional menus, assisting in revitalizing all counts & regular body levels for each client/patient and overall healing.  Currently, she is a Corporate Trainer for a finance company and a Biology Professor instructing Nutrition and Diet Therapy classes at Houston Community College.

Chef Brittany decided to pursue nutrition advocacy because of her own health issues.  After transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, Chef Brittany was able to reverse her own Type II Diabetes and other ongoing health issues.  If she can heal and educate those who crosses her path, that is the ultimate reward.

Meet Crystal Hall, the Chief Communications Officer. Crystal is the Nutrition Communications & Marketing Manager for the 7th largest school district in the country. Ignited by her passion for herbal healing, Crystal uses her urban influence to teach women and children how to eat whole and be whole.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Crystal holds a Bachelor’s in Nutrition and a Minor in Public Relations and Strategic Communication from Arizona State University. During her studies, she served as Health Chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) where she created resources for students of color on campus.

After undergrad, Crystal quickly rose from intern to Director of Child Nutrition, implementing and enhancing federal programs throughout the state of Texas. She has also served as the Wellness Department manager for a plant-based cardiovascular clinic and restaurant.

Alright, so we are excited to get this conversation started.  We want to remind you that this panel is for educational purposes. These are not personalized recommendations or advice.  Always consult with your medical professionals regarding any health or medical related issues. So let’s jump right in.

Crystal, let’s start with you.  For women suffering with fibroids, what foods have been shown to help eradicate or reduce these tumors?
Although the scientific research is still underway, there is a sacred lineage of knowledge that many women who suffer with fibroids have reported to contribute to either shrinking or eliminating the tumor. That sacred knowledge is centered around healing with food and healthy life practices that reduce stress and trauma. These foods include a heavy plant/herb based diet that completely eliminates chemicals, radiation, and toxins both internally and topically. Chocolate is a common taboo associated with a menstrual cycle in which women feel so satisfied after consuming chocolate.  Magnesium is in chocolate which will also help in stabilizing mood swings. As your hormones begin to regulate upon the final stage of the menstrual cycle, consuming a stable and healthy diet will aid in managing your hormone levels. We recommend to consume a diet with a variety of each food group including complex carbohydrates (multi-grain hot cereal with cinnamon & dates, baked turmeric sweet potato, etc.), fruits, colorful vegetables, nuts and seeds in order for your body to digest and absorb the necessary nutrients in order to maintain hormone regulation. – Brittany Walker-Craig, M.S. | COO of Femme & Flora. Thanks for that Brittany. Crystal, what are some natural remedies for PMS?
Some cases of PMS are a reaction caused by inflammation of the lower-abdominal area.  It’s important to note that consuming anti-inflammatory herbs and fruits consistently within your meals will help reduce these symptoms and other pain inflicted areas. It’s so much better to be proactive, than reactive when dealing with PMS. Natural remedies for premenstrual cramps contain anti-inflammatory properties such as wild-harvested sea moss, organic ginger (tea), dandelion (tea), organic turmeric & black (tea), chaste berry, ginkgo, as well as other anti-inflammatory herbs. Got it, balance can be hard, but we appreciate the insight.  Brittany, maybe you can tell us what’s responsible for the changes in emotion during the cycle?
The change in emotions during the cycle are contributed to the levels of hormones in the female body.  Low levels of serotonin can cause irritability and sadness while estrogen and progesterone can cause mood swings.  One of the most severe Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) symptoms is a mood swing which can lead to an influx in anxiety and anger.  Eating nutrient-dense foods daily will aid in a healthy mood and increase serotonin which is a neurotransmitter that helps calm and soothe individuals by delivering a more cheerful and relaxed attitude.  Foods that contribute to balancing emotions while on a menstrual cycle are berries, beans, dark chocolate, fish, herbal teas, green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collards, turnips, etc.) and whole fruits. – Brittany Walker-Craig, M.S. | COO of Femme & Flora. It’s fascinating to learn about the significant role our consumption can play. Lolade, can products like pads, tampons and liners contribute to painful menstrual cramps?
Absolutely. The chemicals used in most sanitary products can be big contributors to menstrual cramps and menstrual discomfort. The skin that forms the labia is very sensitive and absorbent and the vagina itself is a highly-absorbent part of the body due to its mucosal membranes. Products like tampons, which are inserted into the vaginal cavity can contribute to discomfort because toxic chemicals inside of the product can  be absorbed and cause pain, irritation or discomfort. Tampons are also highly absorbent and can absorb mucus in addition to blood, further drying out the vagina.

For starters, we recommend switching to organic, chemical-free sanitary products. To take things a step further, you can try reusable underwear or pads that remain outside of the vagina, allowing your body to maintain its natural flow. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to remain Consistent! When I see these popular quotes such as “Consistency is Key”,it’s easy to say the quote is cliché but the truth is, you must remain consistent for anything to work in your favor! One of the first goals I achieved under my new mindset was getting in shape. While remaining consistent with my daily workouts and eating choices, my body started to change and everyone took notice. What everyone didn’t see was me getting up at 4:30am to workout for an hour, shower, get dressed, go to work, come home to cook, and spend time with my family. There was a lot of sacrifice to get me to the finish line but ultimately if I hadn’t change my mindset and remain consistent, I would have given up long before achieving my goals. It’s so much easier to give up or say something not wronging when you’ve only being doing it for a couple of weeks or months. You must devote time, energy, and sometime money to get the things that you want.

When it comes to fitness and trying to stay on the right track, remember to surround yourself with support or get involve with local fitness support groups. It’s so easy to get backtrack with what the naysayers are talking about and because our minds are so powerful, we can also become our own naysayer. That’s why it’s extremely important to change your mindset first. When I changed my mindset years ago, I told myself that I was going to be dedicated and discipline enough to not let anything distract or keep me from being consistent with reaching my goals. These principles doesn’t just apply to fitness but also in the Real Estate and other industries. I honestly apply these to my everyday life! There will always be naysayers but with a Powerful Mindset and Remaining Consistent you will always Beat Any Odds.

Frankly, I believe that my “journey” has yet to begin. I’ve been modeling for a very long time, although it’s been very spasmodic. In that time I feel like I’ve learned so much, and yet I’ve learned nothing. At only eighteen years old, I don’t know whether I can say I’ve ever had a journey at all. I’m still so young, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that all lessons learned hold significance. Also, that you should always have the drive & commitment to constantly expand your knowledge. You can never fully know anything no matter how much you may think you do.

I did, however, learn to love myself in a new light. Since I was a child, I had always struggled with viewing myself in an empowered manner. I was very clearly always an outcast, which led to a lot of internal dilemma. I never felt represented as a tall woman of color. I faked being confident in the hopes that someday I’d truly feel that way about myself. Struggling with mental illness has also made it very difficult to truly be content with my environment and myself. Seeing exceptional diverse models loving every inch of themselves empowered me. Modeling has taught me to love & appreciate every minute detail about myself. Even the things I despised.

Living in Houston, you know how diverse the world and the United States is. Yet, on every platform so many people are underrepresented. Media doesn’t look like real life. Eventually as I began to model again after my hiatus, I took notice of how much more diverse the industry is now. How many people are kicking doors open despite being steadily refused. Young people in cities around the country curating their own scenes and culture. It’s so inspiring. I’ve always believed in making your own opportunities, and fighting for who you are and what you deserve. The most important lesson is to take matters in your own hands. If you want something with all your heart, you will find a way to make mountains move to attain it. Where there is a will, there will always be a way. Carve your own pathways, force doors open. There is really nothing to be afraid of.

Although the industry still has a long way to go, the diversity goes to show that there is no one set standard of beauty. We’re all unique in our own way. It’s beautiful and I wouldn’t want it any other way. This is how it’s supposed to be. We shouldn’t be striving for an analogous society. Embrace your differences. Wear them with pride. Fight for what you believe in, even if it threatens to take your all from you. We’ve only got one life!

Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.

We had the honor of connecting with some of the city’s brightest leaders and role models and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like dthey are facing insurmountable odds.

It may be a difficult journey or a trip you didn’t choose or plan for -but the answer is always just take the next step. When we focus on today and take small, manageable, action we can get thru even the most challenging things. And sometimes we may choose a path that doesn’t work. That is ok, a wise therapist once told me, “Laura, sometimes you might take a step back but when you realize it you take two steps forward.”

Odds are for LasVegas not humans we are far to complex and have the power of choice and how we react to a situation.

I believe there is no force as strong as a focused drive, so keep your eyes on the prize and remember your getting closer to your goal when the times get tough. If it were that easy everyone would do it, the real question is how bad do you want it.

My advice for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds would be that they should honestly buckle up because it’s a part of life and they’re just getting started. These past 3/4 years for me have been an absolutely journey of ups and downs. At some points it felt like there were more downs than there were ups until I realized I needed to change my mind set. Gratitude is something that everyone should have. Without being grateful for the blessings you’re surrounded by today, you’ll never be open to receive anything new. You can’t expect for a miracle to drop into your lap and change your world if you aren’t willing to put forth the effort to change your world yourself as well. So moral of the story would be to keep pushing. Whenever you feel like you can’t go anymore, go some more. Whenever you feel like times are dark, find a way to shine some light into your world. I would first say a prayer, then begin to deal with what’s causing the insurmountable issues. Then set achievable goals to chip at the issues that are preventing you from reaching your goals. Remember you are a winner, and winners prepare to win at all cost.

Seeing the positive in events happening in your life has a crucial importance. Learning from mistakes, and motivation can be two examples for you.

As an architect, I got in and out several businesses, and always have seen the fact that my failures teaching me how to manage my business life, social life, relationship with people, and also the life itself. I might have spent some time and money to be successfull in my life and failed, but because of my failures, I have a lot of experience and usefull set of skills.

It is not always easy to stay motivated, but the motivation is the key factor stepping forward to success. See the positive side of your failure, and go to the next chapter of your life, because once you have failed on something, now you have experience. You know you can do it this time. And never forget, nobody gets the success in one step. Motivation will always give you the power of stepping forward.

Every dark night leaves its place to a bright and shiny day. Keep yourself motivated, learn to see positive in your failures!

My best advice for someone facing insurmountable odds is to stay focused, keep your eye on the prize, and to never forget the “why” you started your journey to begin with. Whether your goal is starting a new business, finishing school or getting a better job to support your family there will always be obstacles along the way. As a realist, I believe no one ever skips the “struggle phase” of life. We all go through hard times, unfortunately some more than others. There are times we may feel discouraged or feel like giving up, but as long as we’re completing the necessary tasks to accomplish our goals then the struggle will only be temporary, therefore one day, we will reap the fruits of our labor. We all wish life’s journey would be a straight, predictable path, but the road is dusty and windy. Furthermore, each path is our own. There will be days when we are fearful, insecure and feel lost. My advice for that is to simply get out of your head and refocus, keep pushing and never forget the “why.” Mistakes will be made but they are merely lessons where we gain strength and wisdom. We must also understand that there will be times when we only have ourselves to look to and that’s ok, though disheartening we must stay resilient, never buckle under pressure and keep the flame burning that ignited our fire to begin with. We must be willing to fight for ourselves even when no one else will, we will triumph in the end. Remember you are capable of success, deserving of all the great treasures life has to offer, and you’re worth fighting for. Never give up on yourself.

Step 2: Take a moment to shift your perspective to the best case scenario (how does it feel?, what does it look like?, etc.)

As someone who feels like they are currently facing insurmountable odds themself, I would say all you can do is to just keep TRYING. Don’t give up. The second you give up is when you let the odds win. Don’t let it, get back up on the horse and keep going because when you beat the odds you will feel so accomplished. I would advise that person to take it one day at a time. Advising the person to set small goals and to take small steps towards that goal, even if they only reach 10% to celebrate that milestone. If you are at a point in your life where you are feeling defeated and nothing seems to be going your way my first advice would be to pray. Find a quiet place, sit, breathe and pray, then release it. Philippians 4:6-7 says do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. I have been there and I prayed my way out of it.

A few years ago I was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident where I broke and dislocated both of my elbows. I went through 7 surgeries over a year and a half and many months of rehab. With only about 65% range of motion in both arms and 10 permanent screws in each elbow I was told there was nothing else that could be done. I was in a very dark place. But then I began to pray and that’s where He introduced me to cake decorating and treat making. It became therapy for me. I worked through the mental and physical pain I was experiencing.

You can and will get through your adversities if you believe without ceasing. Nothing is too great for God!

The best advice that I can give someone that is facing insurmountable odds is to NEVER GIVE UP! If God brought you to it, he can bring you through it. I know this may sound cliche, but one of my close friends, Jade, shared this bible verse with me, and it stayed with me when I was facing a time like that. The verse is, ” And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” Galatians 6:9. In today’s society, we often compare ourselves to others and lack appreciation for where we are at the moment. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Stay calm, driven, and focused, and before you know it, you will have reached the highest pinnacle there is.

The best advice that I could give is to never give up. Life will throw you curve balls, lean into it and just keep pushing forward. For me, I tend to rely on my faith in God. At the age of 16, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to take on the challenge of being a mother. Today my daughter is twelve years old. We are stronger than what we think, not only physical but mentally and emotionally. Inside our souls lives an unbelievable amount of strength and potential that we don’t recognize or refuse to see. We should believe in ourselves and confront any obstacles that are in the way of what we want with faith and optimism, trusting the process. Seldom times we do fail, and it’s frustrating and we start to loose faith in what we thought was in our grasp. Remember that desire motives hope and hold on to your dreams, as corny and as cliché as it may sound. Don’t matter what the consequences are, keep grinding until you get where you want to be.

My best advice for someone facing such a huge challenge, would be to break it down into small goals. If we focus too much on the big picture, it can become overwhelming, and we quickly feel discouraged and give up. But if we break it down into small tasks, and only focus on reaching the next small task, before you know it you’ve reached your goal! Imagine trying to climb a huge mountain…. rather than thinking about getting to the top, which seems impossible, think about just hiking 30 yards to that big tree over there… boom, done! Now, walk another 30 yards… and just keep breaking it down into small goals that feel doable. This trick works in all areas of life!

I advice taking a step back and looking at why this feels insurmountable. Even Everest is scaleable given the right guidance and equipment. A slight shift in perspective might be all you need to get that ball rolling.

I find very many designers who are incredibly talented can’t keep up a work ethic because of lack of focus and discipline. Sit at that table everyday and the mountains will move.

Don’t get so wrapped up in the difficulties and fears of a challenge that you don’t take the necessary actions to overcome the challenge. Progress is progress, big or small. The key is to get started and keep the momentum. Stay positive and ask for help if you need to. Whatever you do, just keep going. Remember that in the end everything will be okay, if it’s not okay, it’s probably not the end.

Be assured,you are not alone. Yes, you might feel overwhelmed, helpless and/or afraid; or you simply don’t know what to do. Dwell deep into your inner spirit and believe there is an answer! Then God, your guiding force, shows up strong when you are at your weakest. Allow Him to take the lead.

Like assembling puzzle pieces, search for steps that appear to be manageable and achievable and group them into categories requiring similar skills, talent and knowledge.

After assessing all “manageable” groupings, prioritize them in such a way you can visualize a path toward a possible outcome (consider your skills, time, energy). Which step is first? Second? What items can YOU do? What can you ask OTHERS to help you do?

Start now…take one positive step at a time. Each small accomplishment is a “big win!” Your confidence builds. Don’t stop! If the step did not work, no worries. Go back to the last step that worked and find an alternative path to move you forward.

What lessons did you learn? Here are a few questions to ask yourself.
1. How and why did this obstacle show up?
2. Did I miss some clues before it reached an insurmountable level?
3. When resolving the problem, what worked? And, what did not work?
4.. What did I learn about myself in the process?
5. Be grateful!

We live in a generation where pressure thrives; pressure from others that we think are doing better than us, pressure to prove that we are capable of accomplishing certain things and pressure to stand out. I believe that in order to combat these challenges, you must demand effort and resilience from yourself. When people doubt you, choose to let that drive your passion instead of filling your mind with uncertainty or hesitation. Take time to celebrate the small victories. I’ve been there. Looking back now, that season of my life truly felt insurmountable but I made it through and so will you. When life hits you with difficult challenges, this is an opportunity to reset your relationship with self and dive deeper into your personal relationship with God. I couldn’t have gotten through it without trusted wise counsel and an amazing support system.

My Advice from personal experience:

Turn down the noise (limit social media input). Slow down. Breathe. Pray. Pray A LOT.

Develop a Sacred Self Care practice. For me this involved a deep prayer and meditation practice at the start of my day every day (and many times at night too). This was the game changer for me. First thing in the morning, before any noise from the outside world (phone, texts, emails, social media etc), get to a quiet space. Use this time to center yourself for the day, pray, express gratitude, journal, read, practice deep breathing, practice being silent, practice hearing your inner voice, practice hearing God’s voice, listen to healing & soaking worship music. During prayer, ask questions, be transparent, pour your heart out but then practice being still and silent long enough to hear the answers. Pray for wisdom. Pray for discernment. Seek to learn the lesson from this challenging season so you don’t repeat it.

One of the best gifts you can give yourself during this time is to do the forgiveness inner work and take the time to heal. Don’t be afraid to seek support through counseling or therapy services. Forgive and release yourself. Forgive and release others who have hurt you. Don’t get stuck in the hurt. Let it go. This is not easy; however, the inner peace and radiance that comes from this work is priceless.

I believe that we all have an internal GPS that is activated and strengthened when we spend time in prayer and stillness. Use this season to cultivate your internal GPS. It will guide you moment to moment and one day you’ll look up and you’ve made it through what you thought you couldn’t. Only now, you’re stronger, healed and better than ever.

You can write letters filled with gratitude to the people who have impacted your life, or you can turn to social media to express your gratitude.
