Art & Life with Isabel Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Wilson.

Isabel, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a textile and clothing designer based in TX. I lived in NYC for about ten years designing for other lines like Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim & just moved back home last spring to be near family. I have a little studio here on Richmond Avenue near James Coney Island. I design my own fabrics which make my clothing unique to other lines out there. Each collection is meticulously designed in my studio through the development of custom swatches on my brother knitting machine, hand-dyed silks, embroidered elements, and hand painted artwork which will later be transformed into unique prints. Everything is designed and sewn in the USA except for the 100% cashmere hand-knit garments, which are all handmade by a women’s cooperative in Kathmandu, Nepal.

I also teach at The Glassell School of Art Junior School.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Color has always been the thing that gets me going the most. Right now, I am working on my next SS19 collection which is going to be shown at James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace here at Rice on September 25th. James Turrell/ Joseph & Anni Albers/ Blinky Polermo/ Imi Knoebel/ Rothko… these are the artists whose work I have recently been looking at and studying. In the end, though, I am making clothing for real people, so I am most inspired by dressing my friends, and making them feel beautiful and special.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Never give up.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
All are welcome to my show at the Skyspace! It is on Tuesday, September 25th from 8:30 – 9:30 pm and is open to the public. Also, I have an online store and a showroom that anyone can visit on the weekend (by appointment) at 1955 Richmond Avenue, Houston, TX, 77098.
