Art & Life with Justin Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Lewis.

Justin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Growing up as a child, I was into all kinds of things from making music, playing sports, video games, drawing, skateboarding, but most importantly reading comic books! As a kid, I gravitated towards characters like SpiderMan because he was a regular guy during the day, but at night, he became a web-slinging, crime-fighting superhero! The older I became, the idea that I could be the technical person Corporate America expected me to be during the day while using my creativity after hours to express a side of myself that was often suppressed drove me to express my artistry more. For 10 years I expressed myself through a street dance known as “Krump.” One day I sustained an injury during a workout and I decided to pick up a brush. After picking up a brush, I picked up a camera and began to put my artistry to work by creating some of the most unique and creative videos on how to get 360 waves and 720 waves. During the day, I am Justin, a civil engineering graduate from Texas A&M University, but at night, I am known as the J Lew the Don!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
People know me for making some of the dopest, but informative YouTube videos that teach people how to get healthier hair for men and women pursuing a lowcut hairstyle that is timeless and classic. The canvas is our hair, the tools are brushes and combs, and the artwork is the patterns we choose to create!

The reason why I make my videos are because waves help one maintain a subtle, but distinct image. My videos help break down not only the basics of getting waves but the scientific aspects of growing natural & healthier hair as well. Not many people are rushing to become bald. Most do not know how to properly take care of their scalp and hair to slow the process down of losing their hair either. My goal is to teach people how to become educated consumers by knowing which products they should look for when shopping, as well as how to be the waviest person in their cities worldwide while being a professional because there is no point having elite waves if your lifestyle is not elite as well.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
LEARN HOW TO CUT THE MIDDLE MAN OUT WHEREVER YOU CAN! I spent 15+ years learning how to do things for myself, so I could produce what I truly wanted to capture without having to pay someone else to attempt capturing my vision. Also, just like Peter Parker, find a job/career that covers your cost of living and allows you the time to pursue your artistic endeavors!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Simple…My YouTube channel is called “JustinTime”
