Art & Life with Sam Steph

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Steph.

Sam, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in rural West Texas in a creative family. Making our own Christmas ornaments out of cockle-burrs and peacock feathers was encouraged. The stark landscape was a fertile environment for my creativity. I was prompted to study architecture at Texas Tech, after my studies, I spent several years traveling in Asia, mostly Japan and China. I was enamored by the meticulous craftsmanship of the architecture in Asia. There, the architecture becomes the art. This influenced the way I would eventually create my own style. Deconstruction/Reconstruction.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is inspired by my environment. I construct abstract, often three-dimensional work that incorporates repurposed and newly painted wood surfaces. Some of the pieces contain hundreds of individually cut and joined parts. This process came to me by accident mostly. I was always arranging and organizing smaller bits of wood from cabinetry projects. One day while arranging these bits, I was struck by the beauty, and my craft was born.

Communities and cultures fragment around us. Our world seems endlessly divided. However, our need for belonging to something greater than ourselves brings us back together time and again.

This is the thread that runs throughout my work.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Follow your heart and surround yourself with people that believe in you. Hone your craft; technique doesn’t happen over night.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I occupy studio 218 in the Silos at Sawyer Yards. I open my studio doors on second Saturdays and during shows throughout the year. My work can also be seen at ARTiQUE at 1024 Studewood. The best way to support an artist is always by collecting their art!
