Check out Lourdes Maria Ong’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lourdes Maria Ong.

Lourdes Maria, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
According to my parents, I had an inclination for art at a young age. They nurtured my creativity by signing me up for art classes. I was born and raised in the Philippines. When I was nine years old, my family migrated to the United States in pursuit of a better future. I continued to draw but lost enthusiasm when I reached high school. During my senior year on a school field trip, I was struck with the sublime when I walked into the Sistine Chapel. I was consumed with emotion as tears welled up in my eyes as I stood under the Creation of Adam. I was awestruck by the glory of what a human being had accomplished with his passion, skills, and bare hands. I dedicated myself to the Visual Arts from that moment on. Drawing and painting became my focus after witnessing the transcendental realm of Art.

Upon graduating high school, I enrolled at Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, Texas. The TSC Fine Arts program promoted the fundamentals and structure of classical academic training. Despite being a two-year program, students were taught the Bargue plate, how to draw and paint from life, and most importantly how to objectively see. I learned to paint in a traditional manner reminiscent of an atelier. I became an apprentice to Professor David Ransom. His knowledge and wisdom as a painter helped me understand painting as a humanistic endeavor. I also visited art museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Art Institute of Chicago to expose myself to works of past centuries and to critically analyze the works that seem to compel my attention. I moved to San Antonio, Texas this January to continue my education at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’ve always been inclined to paint realistically while trying to capture the essence of what is depicted whether it is an individual or a scenery. My visual interests that I apply to my work is currently based on the optics of naturalism, academic training of the realists, and the search of sublime quality of romanticism.

Another major interest of mine is to depict a sense of atmosphere and depth as if the viewer was looking through a window. Painters who have accomplished this and influenced me greatly are Diego Velázquez, Thomas Eakins, Ilya Repin; most are painters of the mid to late 19th century. I’ve painted with these interests while basing the subject matter from my personal relationships and experiences. My ultimate goal is to find an overall balance and harmony in the technicalities of painting: composition, value, chroma, softness, and hardness of edge, focal point, etc. I wish to paint well from nature and life as my counterparts do!

I hope to inspire people to create art as those who have inspired me. I wish to spark awareness so people can appreciate the beauty of their surroundings. On most occasions, I paint people or places that I come across in life. Portraits may vary from individuals who I personally know to a flamenco dancer I saw perform. I wish to translate what I see and experience to my painting so the viewer can feel the same way as I did in a certain moment in time.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success to me is finding the balance and harmony of the technicalities of painting. Once I reach that goal, I have found overall unity in my mind thus being self-aware and touching the transcendental realm of art.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can view my works mainly on Instagram at @lourdesmariastudio. When there’s an upcoming exhibition, I usually announce it on Facebook and Instagram. If anyone is interested in purchasing an artwork or placing a commission, they can contact me through email at lourdesmaria.business@gmail.com.
