Community Highlights: Meet Monet Sance of The Letter Lady

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monet Sance.

Hi Monet, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To begin with, I was born in Los Angeles and raised in Austin, Texas. I’m naturally a dominant and aggressive woman… I never liked anyone giving me orders or telling me what to do; therefore, I opened my own business. My first job was in an office and I witnessed a lot of interesting correspondence being communicated via inbound and outbound.

At this company, I was responsible for creating and generating various emails to our staff, vendors and clients. Also, I was the voice of the company. Within this task, I was sometimes perceived as having an unprofessional “voice tone” and attitude; however, this was an inaccurate assumption. I felt that some people unjustly put me in the angry “Black woman” trope category because I have a southern accent. As a result, I began speaking less and typing more. I learned that it’s very important to keep a paper trail as evidence to support your statement(s) in the event that you come encounter a breach or misunderstanding.

My social circle consists of people who have writer’s block when the time comes for them to get their thoughts, ideas or issues down on paper. Given that I know how to communicate in a professional manner, people started reaching out to me with their issues and asking me to help them write letters for them on their behalf. At some point, I was helping and working with so many people as a volunteer and then one day I decided to sell my services. Now, I’m a boss when I’m awake and I’m a boss when I’m asleep. 💤

The moral of the story is, BOSS UP or get bossed around‼️ I am proud to be a Black woman of intelligence and I aspire to help young Black girls understand their inherent beauty & brains, too! – The Letter Lady

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been a little bumpy. I’m struggling with getting support from people. It appears to me that everyone wants to benefit or be compensated for simply reposting my flyer and or business card.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
If you’re having a difficult time getting your thoughts, ideas or issues down on paper, I help assist people with writing letters. I simply write down what the client communicates to me but in a professional manner.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Promote yourself! Pray! And there’s always more than one way to get skin a cat; meaning, there’s always another way around something, do not take “no” for an answer.
