Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylan Williams.
Jaylan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started on May 4, 2018, I got a phone call from one of my youngest brothers that our mother had been in a car wreck and my heart immediately stopped. I didn’t know where she was or what exactly happened I just know I needed to get to her to see if she was okay. I was living in the south of Houston at the moment and she was in East Texas which was about an hour and 30 minutes away. When we finally reached Tyler, TX, she was in surgery and we found out her boyfriend had died from the impact, that’s how bad the wreck was. She was in ICU for 2 weeks before she passed away, and during that time I’m steady thinking what are we going to do. She was the provider in the family; I was in college, my 20-year-old brother at the time was working on finding a job, and my 15-year-old brother was, of course, in high school. My mother took care of us and now that she has passed on what’s next, so I mentally prepared myself for those two weeks, not thinking of the worse but thinking of reality what could happen next? Where will my brothers go? Who is going to provide for us? This is how I came up with my online boutique store, Donier Perry, this is my mother’s middle name and her last name. I thought it sounded very unique and different so I stuck with it. She was my motivation, I wanted her name to live on and I wanted people to know who she was. She always told me to do whatever I put my mind to, that’s why I didn’t work and go to school because she wanted me to focus on my studies. I stuck with it so I could be able to take care of her like she took care of me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve hit a few obstacles down the road when starting an online boutique store people look for the latest fashions that are out. Also thinking, “Hey, you’re not the only one doing this so apply as much pressure”. Praying helped me a lot, now everybody is different and has different beliefs but this is what worked for me.
One of the main struggles I had was finding the right vendors!! Now, this is very tricky at times, and when you know nothing about it, it kind of sets you back a little. My sister had an online boutique store at the time so she gave me a little boost in the beginning. It’s hard finding the right materials, will it feel good on the skin? Does it stretch? Is it true to size? (I got this question a lot).
My advice is to RESEARCH first! Do a lot of research, gather all your information, and make sure you have all your paperwork!
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I do everything by myself first in foremost! It can be a hassle sometimes but I have this saying,” If you want something done, you gotta do it yourself”. Now, one of my business expands itself, then I will hire my own team to assist me, but I still like to be hands-on with loads of work.
I am known for my store, investments, and just believing and not stopping my dreams. Many people are inspired by my work and how I jumped right into it and made things happen for me and my family. My store is more known for my Donier Perry T-Shirts, a lot of those sold out quickly. I sell Women and Men’s clothing and plan to expand to children, maternity, and business casual.
I’m not sure what sets me apart from others because everyone’s story is different.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I went to three business seminars by the same woman and it helped me a lot! I watch her social media and she is always trying to mentor everybody and help people make the right decisions and just believe in your work. Her name is Jessica Dupart, she is the CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products. Social media plays a big part in society today, and it helps a lot so I recommend taking advantage of it!
