Today we’d like to introduce you to Latavia Marshall.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am 19 years old, born and raised here in Houston, Texas. My passion for cosmetics came about in middle school. Like many young girls, I began playing in my Mom’s makeup bag early on. I would try to make my face in elementary. In middle school, I started to understand what makeup tool was used for what features. I would apply makeup and even go as far as clean under my brows with my razor. In high school as a freshman, I joined a well known HISD dance organization called “The Blue Diamonds”. We had a professional MUA come and teach us techniques we would need to make up our faces for the field. I learned how to do eyebrows, apply eyelashes, and other useful techniques. The passion for cosmetics has always been there. I’ve tried so many crafts even Eyelash extensions. Bryanna Banks (@thegalorecollection) inspired me to do lashes. I would have her post notifications on and tune into every set. She taught me branding tips and would give me advice via text even after our 1 on 1. Extensions took off fast in Houston. I was ready to do something new. I reached out to many vendors and took that risk. I received my first batch of lashes and sold them $5 each and I’ve been selling them since. My 25mm Mink lashes are now $7 each and I sell Lipgloss as well. Lashes and Lipgloss is the perfect combination! I have so many more products in mind for my business. Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like any other business, it has not been easy. Starting out, I struggled with believing in my own brand because I didn’t have a big audience and I didn’t think my products would sell. I struggled with consistency as well. My advice for young women who are starting a business or promoting a brand to believe in that brand even when nobody else does. Push that brand all the way! Pray for your business. Pray that God continues to help you push your business. If the owner has no faith in the business, who else will.
What should we know about EyeCandy Cosmetics by Latavia? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I sell 25 mm Mink Lashes and Lipgloss. My business is known for its last long fluffy lashes. What sets my brand apart is its inexpensiveness. Unlike my competition who sells their lashes at $10 mines are $7 each. I also am familiar with my audience, I know what they like, and I get them involved. Ladies ages 16-40 buy my lashes so I go big. I get my followers involved by having them vote on products. That way they know what’s coming and they can’t wait for it. I don’t cheat my customers my products are affordable enough to purchase while still allowing me to make profit.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
My advice for networking is Take the risk. When I found interest in Eyelashes, me stepping out of my comfort zone and direct messaging Bryanna Banks was the best decision I made. Not only did I find a great instructor, but she’s my mentor, a great friend, and my Brand Ambassador. She’s very supportive of EyeCandy and what we sell.
