Exploring Life & Business with Gabriella Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriella Thompson.

Hi Gabriella, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story began at the age of 14 when my family decided to leave England for “The Land of Opportunities”. This is when my mindset shifted and the idea of owning my own piece of capitalism started. My father gave me the “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” book, written by Robert T. Kiyosaki, at the age of 15. For my remaining high school years, I grew this obsession with real estate and wealth creation. I invested more time in reading materials I purchased for myself and attended seminars more than my actual high school education. Understanding the importance of the real estate market and then graduating in ’08… The recession was ripping our economy apart, witnessing families lose their homes, the job market crisis. I knew I needed to master the real estate industry.

As soon as my immigration status changed, I received working authorization and an SSN. With that, I decided to fully submerge myself into the world of real estate and get my real estate license in the state of Texas. With guidance from “Champions School of Real Estate”, I was able to achieve this very quickly.

I worked as a Realtor for the next six years and then earned my Broker’s license and became Broker-Associate with a major brand under the Realogy umbrella. For the following three years, I exercised and developed my skills as a mentor, office manager, gained merger and acquisition experience as well as brand development experience. This equipped me with the skills and practice to build my own empire.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The median age of Realtors in Texas is 55, which presents challenges of its own. I would automatically be discredited before being given the opportunity to demonstrate my skills and expertise. Even to this day, due to my age, many believe I’m just the managing broker and not the actual founder of the T | Associates brand. In response to this challenge, I’m a huge advocate for other young professionals, especially within the real estate industry. I proudly serve the Houston Association of Realtors (HAR) YPN Advisory board as well as on the state level for Texas Realtors YPN Advisory Board. These powerful platforms provide the opportunity to support and develop our future leaders.

Another major challenge was faced during the beginning phase of the Covid-19 pandemic. This was the first time I was faced with a major obstacle where I didn’t have a model to follow. Each step was decided as updates were given by our local governing bodies. We had families in need of our services as they were stranded in the middle of the buying and selling process, the firm also needed to continue to generate revenue, but we had to decide what was best for our community. Until the president of our local association (Bob Hale) fought for Realtors to be categorized as “essential workers”, I had to rely heavily on local advisory board meetings. This is where all major industry leaders gather and discuss what is best and how to move forward. I’m extremely grateful for the collaboration and support received from other industry leaders during this time. To keep evolving and growing, it’s important to surround yourself with other major movers and shakers who have a heart for the community, and it’s important to give back.

Overall, starting your own business comes down to how well you manage your own stress and confidence levels. Having the confidence to make bold decisions and see them through is a challenge that I continue to face as my company evolves in a forever-changing economy.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Before my real estate career, my dream was to be a professional Eventer. I had an Irish thoroughbred that would frequently throw me off during training. My mother was very strict about getting straight back on before fear had a chance to set in and scare me into never riding again. Living by this principle has taught me to always maintain momentum before fear has a chance to catch up and paralyze my intentions. I’ve witnessed a lot of brilliant talent go to waste simply due to fear. If they only knew how to overcome their fears, they could have become giants. Hence, my favorite quote “What if I fail? Oh, but Darling, what if you fly?” – Erin Hanson.
