Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrishayla Smith.
Hi Chrishayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been a creative person and it literally pumps through my veins. I come from a long lineage of entrepreneurs in many different fields. My family has someone who does almost anything you can think of….Tax services, event styling, hair, real estate, filmmakers and wardrobe styling just to name a few. So the desire to have my own business has always been in my heart, I just wasn’t always sure what the business would be. I grew up DIYing EVERYTHING because I was introduced to creativity at a very young age.
I’ve kind of always known that I would be in a field that required a lot of creativity and talking. I remember as a kid, making flyers on Microsoft word and putting them in mailboxes in my neighborhood. Mind you only my family lived in my neighborhood. But I was so determined to create my own flyers, have a business and make money. That same drive is still in me today! I would say my creative mind really got to flourish in college. I attended Oklahoma State University and almost immediately joined the National Association of Black Journalists. Being in that organization opened my mind to so much more! Upper-classmen showed me how to actually work a camera and write stories, and I literally have not stopped since then and that was 2014. It seemed like each year I got more and more creative luckily my major gave me the opportunity to learn the programs to edit and create content while still mastering the communications/ marketing side of things.
When I graduated, I wasn’t sure what I would do with all of the skills but I knew my dreams were BIG. Fast forward to a few years later, my aunt started a business and I started helping her get social media together for it. and that was truly the first time I realized hey, I can really do something with this (even though it was my actual 9-5 job lol). From there, it’s like God dropped the vision of Small Things Branding Co. on my spirit and I haven’t looked back since.
The drive and creativity died a little in 2020, but I was still fortunate to get my first contracted client and teach a webinar or two. I realized the more serious I took it, the more other people did too…really times I didn’t feel like it was being noticed and people were still reaching out so that gave me the motivation to keep going. The next year (2021), I moved to Houston and felt a shift in the business. It’s like I knew I was in a land of endless opportunities IF I got out there and put in the work. So I’ve done that and have been fortunate to make so many unexpected connections and help small business owners in the city. Even though I’ve only been in the city for a year, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made with my business and look forward to continue helping small business owners in Houston and all over the world level up their business on digital platforms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has been pretty smooth for me but definitely not speed-bump free. I would say the most challenging part is building the habits of consistency, which I think is a challenge for a lot of people. Because we’re humans and aren’t meant to hustle hustle hustle all day every day. We have to remember especially as small business owners and creatives that we HAVE to take breaks sometimes. Maintaining our mental health should be a priority.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Small Things Branding Co.?
Small Things Branding Co. is a full-service creative agency that focuses on helping small businesses level up on digital platforms. Our mission is to simply help and to simply give. Our goal is to equip small businesses with the tools they need to make the most of digital platforms through branding, content creation, graphic design and web development.
What makes Small Things Branding Co. different from other agencies is we focus on start-up and small businesses because the small beginnings are special. We know that starting a business can be costly and digital marketing isn’t always in the budget, but we also know the importance of laying a good foundation for branding and digital marketing in the early stages of building a business. That’s why we focus on offering tools like creative direction, content calendars, content creation, brand guides, websites, etc., that will help them maintain great quality digital content for the present and long run.
I’m most proud of Small Things Branding Co. for continuing to help grow people’s dreams (businesses) and build their confidence to show up authentically on social platforms. I look forward to many more years of helping businesses grow!
How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t say any of this is luck. I know for sure Small Things Branding Co. is definitely all God. None of it would be possible without him! He’s the one that continues to give me the motivation, ideas and equipment to be able to help these small businesses. That’s why the mission is to simply help and to simply give… because that’s exactly how I’ve gotten this far, by God simply giving me a gift and purpose, and helping me carry it each and every day with no strings attached. Just a lot of grace and mercy. And that is what I want to be able to do for others through this business.
