Today we’d like to introduce you to Karis Lane.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Karis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Derek Walcott once said: “I read; I travel; I become”. At the age of eight, my passion for travel was sparked! My mom surprised me with a trip to Disneyworld and since then I have traveled to over 20 countries with my favorite countries being Cuba and the United Arab Emirates. I am an only child, so I have always depended on my imagination to entertain me and traveling served as the perfect catalyst. Fast-forward 20 years later and I have taken a lot of trips with some great people.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been smooth, besides some sketchy hostels, traveling has been amazing. The biggest struggle has been being able to get time off of work and being able to afford the trips. I haven’t always been able to stay at the Atlantis’ and Waldorf Astoria’s of the world, but the adventure is the best part of traveling! Young women who want to begin the journey of traveling, whether it’s solo trips or trips with friends, research is the most important part of traveling. Know where you are going, be aware of any cultural norms and do not be afraid to taste new foods and embrace the customs of any place you’re visiting!
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I currently work in Finance with my specialty being Human Resources. While this is my day job, I am absolutely known for my blog and traveling. As a brand, I am most proud of the example I am/can set for young girls and show them a world that they might not know to exist. I want to be the woman I needed when I was younger! The fact that I am a young black woman that loves to travel and is an extreme foodie definitely sets me apart from other brands and bloggers. I am proud of who I am and the journey it took to get me here.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The most important piece of advice I would give any fellow young women would be to ‘be yourself’! Everyone tries to fit into a mold and become what they think is digestible. Being like everyone else won’t set your brand apart from others and will not give you fulfillment, no one else can be you and that is the ultimate power you hold!
