Life and Work with Melanie Moraida-Swenson and Siera Rosales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Moraida-Swenson and Siera Rosales.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Melanie and Siera. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally a small-town girl from Bloomington, TX that had some pretty big dreams. After my first attempt at college, I felt I wasn’t ready for the college experience and I joined the military. I moved to the Houston area from California in 2003 with my youngest daughter in tow after receiving an honorable discharge from United States Marine Corps. I was determined to become the first in my immediate family to receive a Bachelors degree and began taking classes at a local community college and then transferred to University of Houston Downtown, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. The transfer out of the Marine Corps was difficult at times and because I missed the camaraderie of the Corps, I joined the Texas Army National Guard, where I served as a reservist and a civilian contractor. I met my husband in the Guard in 2010 and we have been married for six years. I still wasn’t satisfied with my career, and decided to go back to school, and received my LVN and then ADN-RN degree. I am currently in school for my BSN and then God willing, I will my Master of Science Nursing – Nurse Practitioner degree.

I had my daughter and my husband had two daughters, so we were instantly parents of three girls. In 2017 we found out we were expecting our fourth baby, and yes, you guessed, we were having another daughter. With three kids in tow, we went to receive a 3D/4D ultrasound and decided that the city of Pearland needed a 3D/4D ultrasound facility to call their own. We wanted our ultrasound facility to have a home-like feel with great customer service that would keep families coming back not just for an ultrasound, but to visit. In 2018, my 19-year old daughter, Siera and I received training to perform ultrasounds. Siera continues her education at a local community college and is studying to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. At this point we didn’t have a name for our facility, so my husband, Siera and I began to brainstorm, and my husband came up with the name Due to Love. The word Love was important for us to include in the name of our facility because to us families are made with love, a baby is made from love, and baby is born with love.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has definitely not been a smooth one. My husband and I used a lot of our saving to receive training and purchase all the necessary equipment that we needed. I had to return to work as a nurse to continue with the funding of the facility, so Siera runs the day to day side of the business and I am mostly behind the scenes. My advice to other women is be fierce, have a plan, put that plan in motion. It is okay to be afraid of failure but you will always regret not trying more than never trying. You are going to fail but always get back up. I personally have failed quite a bit in my opinion, but I have four wonderful girls watching me, and it is my job to show them what a strong resilient woman is.

We’d love to hear more about Due to Love 3D/4D Ultrasounds.
At Due to Love Ultrasounds, we perform elective 3D/4D and HD ultrasounds as well as Sneak Peak, an 8-week blood draw that determines gender.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I would say a barrier to female leadership is just finding the time to get out there and do what you love. As a wife, a mom, a nurse and student, it was hard for me to find the time to do this. One day I said I’m going to stop putting this on the back burner and took some time off from my nursing career and did it.
