Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis House.
Alexis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Xela & Vic was originally founded in 2012 under the name Xela Boutique. In my hometown Shreveport, LA. That’s when I quickly learned either they will love or hate me. So, I began to put together fashion shows, gave models a platform to catwalk down the runway, and gave designers a chance to showcase their works. I gained recognition from all around.
Becoming Black Minority small business of the month, several publications in magazines, also being on national tv networks (BET and VH1). It was so amazing working with celebrities and seeing them in my pieces! However, I wasn’t happy nor successful enough to my likings. So I decided to move back to Houston for the second time! I knew once I moved back. I wasn’t coming back to my hometown. I had a game plan and that’s when I decided if anyone is going to take me serious. I needed to attend Fashion school.
So I enrolled in HCC Fashion Department. I love every bit of it. Being a single mom, in a city with no family, working, and attending school was challenging. My daughter, determination, and the love for fashion motivated me. In 2017, my last semester in school. I decided to revamp Xela Boutique to Xela & Vic Collection. The rebranding was in the works with my business partner, my mother Vickie. We collectively created looks, handpicked pieces, and branding. The vision has always been not to forever be just a small business but a company. But October 9, 2017, my mom passed away. Fighting a short battle of lung cancer.
At that moment in time. My determination and faith felt summered in sorrow. I fell into depression for a while but never lost my sight on fashion and goals. So I hit the reset button! Today, I’m proud to say, I relaunched Xela & Vic Collections in May 2019. I stepped out on faith leaving my seven years career in dental to focus on my passion. The best decision ever.
The past few months have been a roller coaster but it’s been so worth the ride! I’m currently molding my brand, showroom, and gain more clientele from all over the world. I keeping the dream and vision alive. My purpose in this lifetime is to live each day knowing I woke up doing what I love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Heck No! I would be lying if I said it’s been a smooth ride. I’ve had so many struggles and not quite done struggling yet. Every lesson for me has been a taught lesson! From Losing a parent, a job, not knowing what career path is better, being a single mom trying to survive. But look I’ve made it and still getting the job done!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Xela & Vic story. Tell us more about the business.
Xela & Vic Collections is a showroom located in Pearland. What sets me apart from others is. I go strictly by appointments. This is to create a one on one experience for my clients. Making them feel relaxed and not rushed. My showroom is just a huge dream closet awaiting them. I also don’t call my clients “customers” because I want them to know. They are top priority when shopping with me. I specialize in women’s contemporary clothing and design. I do design and have been creating looks since the 2nd grade! I am most proud of my ambition to continue to stay positive. and motivate other girl bosses just like myself!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say good or bad luck. I would say FAITH! Faith has played a huge role in my business the good or bad. Me believing, having patience, and timing has brought me this far.
