Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Kahlilaa.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alexis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A creative multimedia powerhouse, I wear many crowns; A professional audio engineer, avid vegan chef, graphic artist, podcaster, photographer and bass line connoisseur. My expressive art spreads across many platforms and I’m just getting started. I’m originally from Alief, the southwest side of Houston, Texas and was raised in a household of powerful women who nurtured my talent and taught me to be Organically Dope, pursue my wildest dreams, and to exemplify the best in everything I poured my energy into. I knew at a young age that the limitless world of creativity was my destiny and that “Plan A” is the only option; “Plan B” was non-existent. Fast forward to the future where I’m embarking on a new leg of my journey where it’s all coming together to share how I see the world, insights and how I find the brilliance and beauty in it all…while chefin’up highly seasoned vegan cuisine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In all honesty, this has been a decade in the making. The whole “10,000 hour” rule most definitely applies here. I’ve always had a passion for cooking, music and art; it’s truly amazing to see how all of my interests came together seemingly overnight. It’s also amazing that I took something that almost killed me (morbid obesity & an obsession with food) is now my career. I’m an advocate and poster child by showing people that weight loss and great food can come from a vegan lifestyle (isn’t that ironic?! lol). My first farmer’s market was in June and fast forward to September, we now have a genuine following and people love the food. I’m still in amazement with all of the rave reviews and repeat customers; we have people coming back 2-3 times. It is humbling and I’m honored to be in alignment to serve my city love.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Herban Frequency – what should we know?
We are a proud H-Town grown 100% Plant Bass’d “Pull-Up” shop serving High-Frequency non gmo/organic cuisine. We are passionate about illuminating the narrative & depiction of what a vegan should “look, sound & act” like; hence the Herban/Urban entendre. We’re infusing Houston and Urban Culture with veganism and making this lifestyle look cool, Mayne.
Behind The FrEQz: As the Founder, creative & marketing director of Herban Frequency, I am a proud native Houstonian. Growing up, I was the poster child for Whataburger, Timmy Chan’s & Shipley Donuts. After being diagnosed with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart in my early twenties I gradually adopted a plant-based lifestyle, reversed my health ailments and lost over 135lbs in a year. With my Texas-sized passion for cooking, Spring ‘19 I finally heeded the advice of friends & family and started offering my meals to the public. As a true music head & professional audio engineer for the last decade I utilize my extensive background in mixing records and approach cooking just like a music mix; attention to detail, flavor balance of highs and lows, leveled spices, passion and loving energy all cultivating a high frequency electrically composed “Opus” of a dish. I LOVE music and every menu item has an audio commercial we affectionately call a #Soundbite.
As a company we truly live by the quote “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” – Nikola Tesla. Everything in the universe has a frequency-based counterpart…most importantly the food we consume.
Our sole purpose is that after you eat with us, your frequency/energy is elevated. Your day is better and brighter. You have the energy and motivation to do and be more. This is why we say #GetUrFreqOn. As a culture we’ve removed the emphasis and importance of a great meal crafted with love and what that can do for the human body & psyche. This is what sets us apart from everyone else…our intention and passion for being, exemplifying and serving up love in the form of curated, highly seasoned vegan cuisine. We have a lot of love to give and the overflow goes into the food. That’s why our customers come back 2-3 times in one day (haha). We are known for our quality ingredients (non/gmo and/or organic) “Chuck Taylor Classic” (American Burger) “The Dy-Lan” (Sausage) “Drank”-an alkaline, organic blueberry lemonade and our infamous “Lexi Cake” southern cornbread shots. I am most proud of my message being received, our customers feel the love and that’s all I ever wanted…to make a difference. It’s more than food to us…it’s an elevated way of serving.
This is only the beginning.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’m still in amazement with the support and help of my soul family who chop onions, stand in this brutal Houston humidity in a 10 x 10 tent, and act as a genuine extension of my vision all while adding their own flavor to the mix. Briona Jackson has been my right hand and left foot (haha) since the beginning. Her belief and “You need to open a restaurant!” is one of the main reasons why I started serving the community. She has also saved me from eating a whole pan of our cornbread during taste testing (lol). Quinton Spears has been another set of eyes to capture our customers enjoying the experience of Herban Frequency. Daijza Carpenter willingly gives up her weekends when she can to come take orders all while having a family of 5 and a demanding job in operations. I am so grateful to family and friends supporting me as I would have no success without their belief, energy and love. It’s an honor to walk on this journey with them by my side…I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are solid people and they ground and encourage me. I cannot forget all of the LOVE from the city of HOUSTON. I go hard for them and my city.
