Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Porras.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always had a love for photography!
When I was little, I loved flipping through fashion and bridal magazines.
I loved how clean and timeless the pictures were so much that I even had a little binder that I kept with all my favorite ones!
Bridal magazines, I was in awe over! looking at how beautiful and classy the issues and spreads were made me want to pursue it as an adult. The idea of being a wedding photographer started to become a dream of mine.
By fall of 2015, I purchased my first DSLR! I was beyond excited to start shooting! At that time, I thought ” oh this is going to be so easy, you just click a button right?” Oh, how 20 years old me was so wrong!
As frustrating as it was to learn all the specks of the camera I put my best foot forward and learned more from each shoot! I started small by practicing with my friends and family, yet I was dying to do a wedding.
Then, in 2016, two distant relatives asked me to shoot their wedding! I felt so honored, and excited that they asked me! I can say that the first wedding I shot went so smooth! Everyone was so happy, kind, and the Brides were both just so loving about me capturing their big day for them! I was overjoyed after that experience that suddenly I became hooked!
While it was a passion I wanted to turn into a full-blown business, sadly chapters in my life between ages 21-23 didn’t allow me to fully dive in and grow as I had always wanted.
There was a time that I felt so discouraged that the fuel that sourced my drive was nearly gone. After losing all my gear when hurricane Harvey happened, suddenly photography felt impossible. It was heartbreaking having opportunities to do what I LOVE, and not being able to because of my circumstances.
Life had a different plan for me. My friend Osiris and her family took me in after losing my home. Her Mom Amber was a fellow photographer too! Amber was kind enough to lend me her gear for any jobs my photography brought until I was able to get my own gear again! for that I am eternally grateful! Each and every shoot made me realize how much I missed being a Photographer and making those deep connections with my clients!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
While I love what I do it has not always been an easy road. Anyone that starts to pursue their passion fully if its photography related or not understands this struggle! Even more so if they are diving into the professional aspect of that passion!
There are so many areas about starting a business, making goals for it, and meeting those goals, that can make us so fearful we want to quit.
When things get hard we tend to doubt and suddenly our dreams and successes seem so far off that it starts to feel impossible. It can be overwhelming and even upsetting.
I myself have experienced this many times in my time as being a photographer. When I have my doubts, what I have found that works best is realizing how far I have come! So much has happened in four short years, and so much more is going to happen!
The best advice I have received is “Never give up!”.
You have to be willing to push through all the opposition you face pursuing your dreams!
You truly will never know what you are capable of till you try!
It’s so important to know your why. Why do you do what you do? Why are you pursuing this?
As long as you know your why behind your passion and you never give up then nothing will ever stop you!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a small photography business.
I specialize in natural light photography. I shoot portraits, couples, and weddings!
I believe in serving each and every one of my clients with love and kindness and truly capturing their personalities and love for one another on camera.
My clients get a very personal photography experience with me, their ideas are welcomed, and at the end of it, they get another friend who loves and supports them on a personal level.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very happy child! very bubbly, friendly, and even sassy at times. My mom used to say I always had a smile on my face!
I loved to sing even when my siblings would complain about it! I loved art! Drawing, painting, dancing were all some of the things I loved!
