Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Gayden.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a kid, I would help my aunt prepare candy bags and decorate for her kid’s parties, over the years I started to develop a creative eye for decorating different events and family functions. In High school, I remember planning and hosting a baby shower for one of my best friends in the science lab. Shortly after high school, becoming a mom myself, I started coordinating, choosing themes, designing invites, the whole nine yards for my babies. I would visit local cake shops and design cakes for their birthdays or team/school functions.
In 2003 after my son Michael’s 4th birthday party, I got so many compliments I decided to launch my business AG Events & Consulting. Being a single mom at the time with small kids in sports it was challenging and made it difficult at times. I was also team mom for my boys’ basketball and football team, every weekend I was busy and that was the obstacle I faced in my early years of business. I either had to pass up an event or miss the games. It wasn’t until seven years later in 2010 that I was able to put in more time and effort to see my business grow and start to get a little buzz. I used social media and every event opportunity that came to me to keep my name and skills out there for people to see.
The year started rough in 2016 but my business flourished and I was able to invest more into myself and my craft. Designing events is truly my passion, I enjoy every minute and detail to coordinating and executing a celebration. I love the reaction that my clients give when they see the finished production, the smile, facial expressions and emotions are the priceless moments that mean so much.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is easy, it takes hard work and commitment and most of all dedication. Being a single mom of children that had weekly sport events there were days I would have no energy or would take a nap in the car in between games. My husband was killed in 2002, my boys were two years old and two months and my stepkids were 3 and 5 at the time. Raising them over the years and trying to maintain balance was hard but it made me into the woman I am today. I had to learn how to manage time, prioritize my schedule, manage dates and coordinate with other vendors while having a full-time job at Rice University as a Department Coordinator and being team mom.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories is going to TSU Student Center with my grandfather daily in the summertime. He was the game room manager, I would just chill with him all day and play video games.
