Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Washington.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a mother of two from Saint Louis, Mo. Moved to Houston with my family with a $1000. I’ve been self-employed for five years now. Moving to Houston from Saint Louis, I knew I didn’t want to be on the same path of working for someone my whole life. In the beginning, it was very hard trying to find my passion. I’ve tried everything to always have a side hustle from an online boutique, online lingerie boutique, selling phones cases lol everything. I’ve started my career in the beauty industry after going to school to become an esthetician. I’ve always suffered from acne so I figured that’s something I could do to make money and learn about my own skin. Once I was done with school, money was a big factor on which profession I could go into. With your esthetician license, you can do facials, waxing, lashes etc is a lot you can do. Since I didn’t have a lot of money to buy what I needed, I worked at different companies learning the business. I worked at a few lash extensions salons to learn how to perfect my craft which leads to me opening a salon. I couldn’t accept knowing I was only being paid $12 an hour but the company was receiving $150 for every service. I knew nothing at all about running a salon or having employees I just knew I wanted to be a have my own business. It wasn’t easy… I’ve made a lot of mistakes learning the business but it was amazing to see the vision come to a reality. I was blessed to have a partner at the time that believed in my vision to help me open my business. After closing my salon in 2018 due to me wanting to go more into spa only services, I opened the beauty spa I’m now where I can say I’m complete.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having kids and running a business is hands down my biggest challenge still to this day. I’ve always been the type to just do it but I’m also a perfectionist so the battle is hard with sometimes. I had to learn to trust my gut. My biggest lesson being a business owner is it’s very hard being nice and a boss. One day, I have seen an interview Beyoncé stated when she stopped trying to make everyone else happy with her business she became happier in life. Sometimes, you have to be a bitch to get things done or you’ll be walked over. Set your boundaries and stand on it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Detox Beauty Studio story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Pray works lol I’ve had some good luck, for example, having a salon for five years. Within those years, I moved to three locations. All of my stylists that worked inside the salon followed me to each location. That’s very rare in this business. I’ve seen many salons come and go everyone think it’s just a pretty salon and boom people run in no its hard work finding loyal stylists. I was extremely blessed to have that loyalty. Bad is luck is going out of town and a pipe buss in the ceiling running out like a shower flooding the bathroom lol Having a storefront with bad luck is expensive.
