Meet Anita Myles of Heavenly Sweet Treats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Myles.

Anita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Let me start off by saying I have always been fascinated by cakes! But especially wedding and custom decorated cakes. In September of 2001, I was a full-time employee of American General /VALIC. One of my co-workers asked if I would like to take a cake decorating class at Garden Ridge Pottery. I wanted to learn how to make cakes for my children who were 11 and 7 at that time. It was a $24.99 two for one special.. that way if we didn’t like it we wouldn’t have wasted a ton of money.

After completion, I started taking cakes to work and my coworkers started placing orders. I would always complain I am not the cake lady! But the more requests I received the more I wanted to continue. In 2002 my manager at work was getting married and asked if I would make her cake. I was reluctant at first but she wouldn’t take no for an answer! I made my very first and largest wedding cake to date for 300 people that July. Since that time I have done hundreds of wedding cakes and even more birthday and other special occasion cakes.

Fast forward a few years… my daughter Nesita started to become intrigued with cakes in 2008 and would always accompany me on deliveries. As a freshman in high school 2009 I began to teach her all of my cake decorating skills and now she is a co-owner of the business! She has far surpassed anything that I would have ever imagined her to do in cake decorating and I am so excited about our future!!

Has it been a smooth road?
I must say this has been one of the hardest yet most rewarding experiences I have ever had! Working full time, being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and cake decorator all at the same time can take a toll on you! My biggest struggle has always been maintaining a healthy work/life balance. I received a break in 2007 when I got laid off from my job. I made a decision to pursue my business full time. I had no idea of what that entailed!

I thought it would get easier but it only got harder. It was a 24/7 never-ending task. I finally decided not all that long ago to slow down, regroup and get some balance to my life!! We now have a work schedule and more guidelines to make things easier and efficient so we can enjoy our family and friends also!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Heavenly Sweet Treats is a home based cake studio that specializes in all occasion custom cakes and desserts. We operate according to Texas Cottage Food Laws. We are known for cakes that not only look great but taste great too! Our tagline is Experience A Taste of Heaven!! I can’t begin to tell you how many people that have told us that they don’t normally eat cake but they love our cakes!! We bake everything fresh never frozen and we limit our orders to ensure the quality and taste stays consistent. That is what we are most proud of.

Everyone loves the look and taste of our cakes and we love our clients!! That is what sets us apart from others.. our personable customer service. Since we limit the number of orders we take each week and don’t mass produce, we allow time to attend to the client’s request and concerns about their orders. We have clients that we started out with doing their wedding cake to a baby shower, first birthday etc. 90% of our business for the last 16 years has been word of mouth and referrals!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel as though Houston is a good place for businesses like ours. This is a”foodie” town! The city’s population is growing so rapidly there’s a lot of room for growth for any food service-based business. What I am noticing now is that people don’t always to go to restaurants or brick and mortar establishments to find good eats, They want the smaller places where they can get great food, great prices and great customer service!
