Today we’d like to introduce you to Anitra “Knycole” Amerson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Merkabah Script Writing Services and Merkabah Films after I returned to Houston from living in Los Angeles for two years. I had been working in corporate America for over twenty years, however I always had a passion for writing. I was going through a divorce, so I found myself back home sleeping in my mom’s wardrobe room on an air mattress. I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I didn’t want to go back to corporate America. For about a week, I meditated for at least an hour everyday and worked out at least five times a week. The question I kept posing was, “What would you do if you could do it for free. What makes you happy?” Somehow the answer always came back to movies and writing.
From there, I did some research and I quickly realized that the scriptwriting business is almost non existent in the Houston film community. I went to my mom and told her I’m going to start a script writing service. She gave me that mama look and said, “Okay, well then do it.” About two months later, Hurricane Harvey hit. It was during that time I was training to become a FEMA Inspector and met an older gentleman named Mr. Early who was also in training. Through casual conversation Mr. Early discovered I started a script writing service and introduced me to his nephew via Facebook. Mr. Early’s nephew and I connected. He asked to see some of my writings, I told him I didn’t have any completed, just a few stories that I’ve outlined.
After reading one of my sample script outlines he called and asked if I was interested in working for him. I told him yes. His next question is what changed my life forever. He asked, “What’s your PayPal account?” I didn’t have one. He told me, “Get you a PayPal account and I’ll pay you today.” It was that moment that I realized I had talent. A man I never met, who lived over 1,ooo miles from me decided to hire me, just based on a sample outline and listening to scriptwriting knowledge and technique. From that day on, my business has grown exceedingly.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had a smooth road throughout this journey because of Brilliant Women In Film. Brilliant Women In Film is an organization comprised of a diverse group of independent filmmakers, producers, authors, writers, actors, stylist, make-up artist and podcast host just to name a few. This wonderful group of ladies have helped me to grow emphatically. I started as a Script Supervisor and Script Writer. Now I am able to direct, create a shot list, video, edit, act, and host and organize a film workshop.
On August 11, 2019 Brilliant Women In Film was awarded Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Furthermore on the same day we became the first all-female film production crew to write and produce a film in the state of Texas.
It’s a blessing to be one of the founding members of this group because I get the opportunity to be surrounded by real talented and skilled female entrepreneurs in the film industry and because of that, being able to cross train and participate in different production roles helps me expand my brand and services. Most importantly, I enjoy the give back. Brilliant Women In Film host a FREE Writers’ Room once a month to the public. We help people go from a concept or idea to production to distribution.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Merkabah Script Writing Services and Merkabah Films – what should we know?
MERKABAH means the divine light vehicle used by ascending masters to connect with and reach those in tune with the higher realms. (MER-light) (KA-Spirit) (BA- Body). It is often known and referred to as the Ezekiel Wheel. I chose this name because I resonate with my higher self. Merkabah Script Writing Services specializes in creating scripts, synopsis, script outlines, editing, and critiquing. What makes my services unique is that I am able to take raw ideas and create a dynamic story. I listen to my clients and do my best to add every little detail of their idea into the script. What makes me proud is the feedback from my clients, especially when they say, “It’s like you went inside my head and pulled out exactly how I saw it.” As well I get excited when I see my client has over a thousand views from a script I either wrote or edited. What sets me apart from others is that I am one of the few if not the only Black-owned script writing service in Houston, Texas. This is a vital opportunity for me to help other Black filmmakers tell their story, because often times our story is minimized, or washed. I too can feel their laughter, pain, success, confusion and sorrows, because it’s often all too familiar.
Merkabah Films is a film production business that specializes in script supervising, craft services, production, directing videography, and unit production management. I am most proud of my organization skills. I think because I worked as an administrator for so long in corporate America, I have a certain rhythm and je ne sais quoi for such a toiling and highly import task. Producing a productive film set takes a great deal of organization skills and an extremely high level of patience. Many filmmakers do not have the patience, budget, time, and/or crew, to get as organized as they would like. That’s why I decided to not only have a scriptwriting business, but also a film production business that specializes in helping filmmakers who are on a micro budget.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think having integrity, a positive attitude, good intentions, focus, open to new ideas, knowing your worth and most important, being happy is important to being successful. My mom has two sayings that I often use to keep me grounded. “Everybody wakes up with their own intentions” and “To thine own self be true.” And I live by that. Everyone has a different criteria for what they consider successful, therefore as long as a person stays true to themselves then they will be successful because they will only participate and give attention to things that make them happy and line up with their idea of success.
