Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Lindsay.
Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was Born in Birmingham, England and moved to the United States at age six. I spent most of my childhood living in the Bronx. I moved to Houston and attended middle school before returning to New York for my freshman year of High School where I played basketball and was head of the student council. During my junior year of High School, I started to pursue a career in the music industry. My best friend got signed to Def Jam Records and he got me a job working in the promotions department part-time while I attended Mercy College.
While working at Def Jam I was mentored by Russell Simmons who I credit for helping develop my entrepreneurial spirit. I left Def Jam and started my own promotions company while working full-time at Chase Bank. My promotions company worked with artists such as Jay Z, Mary J. Blige as well as labels including Bad Boy, Sony Universal, Roc-a-fella Records. It was during this time when I developed the Third Coast Music Conference, which eventually ended up being hosted in Houston.
The Third Coast Music Conference was the forerunner to SXSW and brought artists from across America to Houston for a 3-day music conference and showcase. Matthew Knowles and Rap-A-Lot Records where key contributors and sponsors of the musical extravaganza. As the Internet and social media started to reshape the music industry I decided to move back to England and develop a career in banking.
Upon returning to England I started working at Citi Bank as a branch manager before accepting a senior management position at HSBC. I worked at HSBC for several years and was eventually head hunted by Citi Bank to head a wealth management unit in Canary Wharf, London. During my time at Citi I became passionate about small businesses and entrepreneurs. I started several community initiatives as well as going to local schools to mentor young people.
It was during that period when I started to question what I wanted my life to look like and how to best use my skills and knowledge. I started to seek new and exciting opportunities right here in Houston, Texas. I got in contact with an old friend who introduced me to a co-working concept unlike anything that I had ever seen.
The concept blew me away. A place that meets the needs of micro-businesses by delivering training, mentoring, office space, graphic design, web design, printing, promotion, legal and financial advice all in one place.
I am now the International Operations Manager for Astor Business Centers. Our concept is simple but unique. We provide everything that an entrepreneur or small business needs under one roof. Where else can you walk in with just a business idea and walk out with a marketing strategy and business plan?
Our approach to business services comes from years of working with entrepreneurs and helping them build solid business models that are profitable. I really feel as if everything that I have done my entire life was all preparing me for this amazing opportunity.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been smooth but every obstacle has been a valuable learning experience. The biggest obstacle has been the mindset of small business owners. They are often their own worst enemy.
Working with someone who has a great idea but lacks confidence or conviction is very challenging but the rewards are priceless. Helping someone build a dream that creates a legacy for future generations is a great feeling.
Please tell us about Astor Business Centers.
Astor Business Centers provides end-to-end business support to micro businesses and serial entrepreneurs, we provide the training support and resources that are usually either cost prohibitive or non-existent to start-ups.
We provide free business courses but we don’t stop there. We believe that you have to be a successful Person before you can build a successful business. So, our approach is holistic. We have workshops and training on a range of topics including mindsets, health and fitness, money management, computers and much more.
I am proud that our focus is NOT making money, I’ve done that as a banker for too long. Astor Business Centers goal is to add value in every interaction. Our mantra is to leave everything, everyone and everywhere better than how we found it. I’m really proud of that.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would definitely have held on to www.rocafella.com for a bit longer. I used to own the domain name but I sold it to Island Def Jam before Jay Z really got big. If I had only known….
