Meet Arunkon Vass of Simple Nut Organics in Sugar Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arunkon Vass.

Arunkon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My sons were born with a common skin condition called Eczema. As they were growing up, their condition worsened. I noticed that the over the counter soaps and shampoos I was buying left their skin dry and irritated. I would always have to use some type of moisturizer or anti itch medicine to help reduce the irritation and inflammation after showers. After many months of research and trying different products, I decided to learn how to make my own soaps so I could control what went into the soaps my sons were using on their sensitive skin. I studied all types of processes for various types of soaps and compared over the counter retail store soaps vs organic blends that were out there. As I got better at making them, I started giving my soaps away to family and friends. A lot of them complimented the quality of the soaps and how good it made their skin feel. It really made me feel wonderful and soap making started to grow on me. Simply put, I fell in love with the art.

One day I had heard of a local pop up market for artisans and I decided to take my soaps to the market since I was a stay at home mom. I thought it would be a good way to get an unbiased view of what everyone outside of family and friends thought about my organic soap bars and body butter. I didn’t think anyone would buy quite honestly, but to my surprise, not only did they purchase, but I received some great reviews on my Facebook page. That gave me the confidence to expand my soaps and create new recipes. My husband is a web designer and digital marketer so it was an easy transition for us to open up an ecommerce site: http://www.simplenutorganics.com.

Today both of my sons have improved skin conditions. My younger boy still has flare ups; however, I believe because of the quality ingredients I use in my soaps, it has helped them to feel less irritated with the condition, which unfortunately cannot be cured. Today Simple Nut Organics produces 4 categories of soaps to include Vegan, Unscented, Beer & Wine and Milk Soaps. There’s a category for nearly everyone and almost 30 different types of handmade organic soaps. I’ve also created a mint sugar scrub and body butter that ladies especially find hard to resist. I feel blessed that I am able to create a product of high quality that provide people with better choices than what can be found over the counter.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Initially the struggle was to learn the art from scratch. I have a masters degree in mathematics, but had a strong background in chemistry and science, so in the beginning when I first started making my soaps, I had to learn a lot through trial and error.

However, with persistence, I’ve manage to come a long way.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Simple Nut Organics story. Tell us more about the business.
Well simply put, I own a soaping business. I also sell other products like body butter as well as lip balm. I am proud mostly that I have created something out of a need for a better quality product that people use every day. Like most people, I never really gave much thought to the over the counter soaps and shampoos I purchased until I saw how it affected my own children. After reading the ingredients of these type products and what goes into them, I was shocked that they can even be sold over the counter.

Creating a product that smells good, feels good and made with high quality ingredients makes me proud. I’m proud to place my label and name on it. What sets me apart from others is I hand made my soaps and use good quality oil blends. I don’t skimp on price.

You could say I am very passionate about making soaps. For one, they’re simply pretty to look at and two, I know what I’m applying to my body daily now.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would say my mom has been a major influence on my creativity. I’m a native of Thailand and my father passed when I was 2 years old in a tragic accident. My mom had to raise myself and my siblings alone. So my siblings and I all started work at an early age to help her out. Before I left Thailand to pursue my PhD here in the states, my mom was selling a shampoo made with Bergamot. She continues to sell it till this very day. It has helped me learn how to be creative in that sense. My other influence has been my husband. Before our first born, we worked nonstop in our day jobs. After our first born, we had to find a way for me to stay home so I could take care of him and afford to do so.

He encouraged me to stay home to take care of our sons and if possible to come up with an online business that could grow into something more someday. It took me about 3 years before I found my passion. My husband helps me with the online marketing and website. My sons however are the reasons I even started this business, so I am thankful for having a wonderful and supportive family.
