Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Washington.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Avery. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana by three generations of great women. My mother raised me while being a single parent and had help from my great-grandmother and grandmother. I had no idea at the time that the lessons and love in which I received from these three special women in my life would have such a profound impact during my upbringing.
After graduating from high school, I moved to Houston, Texas to attend Texas Southern University to become a lawyer, but God had other plans for me. On a Sunday morning while sitting in church the pastor was speaking about gifts that God gives us to use as blessings for others. He was telling us that many people don’t use their gifts and he referred to student loans. I remember him clearly saying that the government gives us student loans, but if we don’t pay them back the government will take the money back and maybe God needs to take back the gifts, He has given us if we are not using our gifts to bless others. I immediately felt that the pastor was speaking directly to me and a voice in my head began to encourage me to share my gift of writing poetry with others at a poetry lounge in downtown Houston hosted by Se7en The Poet. It was football season and that Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers were playing and another voice was telling me that I should just go home to relax and watch the game. I decided to go to the poetry lounge that day and shared my gift.
I had never spoken to a large crowd before, because I was an introvert and being an only child, I was very comfortable being alone. Public speaking was totally out of my character, but something remarkable happened after I spoke. God placed people and things in my path directing me to start my very own publishing company and to become a family advocate. I began teaching authors how to start their own publishing companies and as a family advocate my main focus was on the significance of father/daughter relationships. This journey has allowed me to be a blessing in the lives of many of my readers and the people I speak to. It also has afforded me the opportunity to speak at the Congressional Black Caucus and be featured at the NAACP convention in 2018. My catalog of five bestselling books gave me the opportunity to co-author my latest book “Break Through” with legendary motivational speaker Les Brown.
As I reflect on my journey becoming a bestselling author and family advocate I realize that the Sunday morning sitting in church and acting on the message of sharing my gift of writing with others connected me with the desires of my soul, which in turn connected me with my passions and purpose in life. Ministry comes in different forms and I encourage everyone to take time to connect with the desires of their souls and your lives will be filled with everlasting joy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Connecting with the desires of my soul also connected me with my purpose and passion in life which made it very easy, because when we have passion about something we will let nothing stop us from achieving the goals we set forth. All of my skills involving publishing books was self-taught.
