Meet Bennett Greenspan of Family Tree DNA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bennett Greenspan.

Bennett, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been an avid Genealogist since I was a young boy. Therefore, studying my families’ ancestors has been 2nd nature to me my whole life. In 1999, I embarked upon the study of the only one of my 8 Great Grandparents that I had not researched. Eventually I found a gentleman living in Argentina whose surname matched my family, but I was unable to prove that we were related on paper. I turned to DNA testing to confirm that connection, and the outcome was that a whole new industry was born, Genetic Genealogy–the use of DNA testing to find genetic matches, validate family connections and trace ancestry.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There is no such thing as a smooth ride for an entrepreneur. Peaks and valleys are what we are accustomed to. The ride has been wild, but very rewarding. We have connected hundreds or thousands of people who did not know that they were related via DNA testing since we began the company.

As far as the business goes, we have moved from a marketing company that sells DNA tests into a company that has its own state of the art laboratory so today we design new tests and produce them all under one roof.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Family Tree DNA – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Founded in April of 2000, Family Tree DNA was the first company to develop and deliver the direct to-consumer DNA testing for genealogical purposes, until then only available for academic and scientific research. As the only company with its own in-house state-of-the-art genomics laboratory, Family Tree DNA continues to establish standards in the rapidly growing field of genetic genealogy, and our expertise in the space has led to prestigious partnerships, including National Geographic’s Genographic Project.

Along with the world’s most comprehensive matching DNA database, the company’s advanced suite of tests and tools are designed to help customers unlock their family history, find DNA matches and connect with relatives across all their ancestral lines. By combining a wide range of tests with cutting-edge technology, Family Tree DNA provides industry leading products for consumers to gain deeper insight into their genetic ancestry–and all with a simple swab of DNA.

  • Our direct-to-consumer DNA tests are typically between $79 – $199
