Meet Calvin Venus of ToneCrafters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Venus.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in South London, England and now living and working in the Westside of Houston, Texas. I married a Houstonian 7 years ago and never felt the urge to ever move back. I’m a British Caribbean, living in Houston Texas… I have incredible musical influences that like to bring them to the studio.

I was a professional Nightclub DJ and producer in London for under 15 years and now, I’m an independent producer/engineer ( and I own and run an up-coming full-service private studio and label ( in the Memorial area. We passionately make positive and faith-based music in various genres, styles, and production approaches for artists on 5 different continents, 10 different countries.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, although I do love the journey. I moved to Houston with one suitcase full of clothes and a backpack and no idea what I was going to do here. It’s a bit like jumping out of a plan with a parachute… waiting to deploy. All I had was my wife.

I started my business with an old MacBook Pro and a pair of cheap iPhone headphones. Through fellowship and community, I was able to take my craft, knowledge and music production degree and serve. Yes, service is a gift to others with little or no expectation to receive. I knew that at the very least If I were to be successful need to plug into the community and develop a humble home studio.

After 3 years I’m now developing a 1200 square foot studio so I can work with full bands and choirs. I believe this journey has taught me patience, a key component of my continual growth. I feel the entrepreneurial spirit here in Houston helps to my perseverance and develop the resistance to failure.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a mix engineer, an official a Mastered For iTunes mastering engineer and producer.

I’m known for mixing and mastering a diversity in sounds within genres like hip-hop, gospel, country, folk and alternative and reggae music too. New clients contact me because they heard my work on Coffey Anderson, Bizzle, Sherwin Gardner and InderPaul Sandhu to name a few, these artists have recently experienced top 5 Billboard chart successes and genre-based awards.

I believe what sets me apart is my approach to music, is like good food. Good food is like what my mothers and grandmother makes… Its made with love and attention to the ingredients. Music isn’t about what I’ve done, it’s about what I’m doing now, it’s emotional and spiritual. Its how I got the nickname “Food”… I liken myself to a chef, I like to serve dinner hot and with love. I imagine Christ the carpenter… I believe his work was incredible, functional and made with love.

I love Houston because its rich in diversity culturally, I often hear comments like “Houston has no music scene”, We have 3 downtown districts, the artists here are unbelievable and the musicians here have the range and a strong appreciation for different genres… I believe A creative explosion is coming! I’m I want to be in the middle of it.

My approach is simple… extract your creative dreams and serve it.. hot! I’m known for my ability to bring out the best of new and established artists, I think that is the key to my successes. So, I don’t give you want I want, my passion is to give you what you dream to have… let’s get cooking!

What were you like growing up?
When I was younger, I was arrogant, selfish and had to high of an opinion of myself. My faith in God changed all that. The Bible made me look in the mirror and now everything I do is a service, a collaboration and done through fellowship.
