Today we’d like to introduce you to Casilya Smith.
Casilya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am artistically known as SIL! I was born and raised in Houston before leaving the nest to receive my formal education at Florida A&M University and Florida State University! Since returning to Houston in 2015, I have taken on the roles of a 7th grade English teacher and the creator of my brand SIL TheWriter! SIL TheWriter houses all of my artistic endeavors including: photography services, my personal blog, and my published poetic and literary work— “Dear King”(2019) and “TPTDE: The Little Pink Book”(2016)!
I started writing when I picked up a journalism class during my senior year in high school! I wrote editorials about things that I experienced such as: bullying, colorism, and low self-esteem. My editorial column served as an outlet for the pain I couldn’t share with anyone at home. During my time as editor, I received an outpour of positive feedback from my teachers and peers and many people felt as if they had found their voice through mine. I would often shy away from the attention though and the idea of being vulnerable, but in hindsight, I see the role it all played in my purpose…
In college, I joined a collegiate modeling organization called FACES Modeling Troupe. I was able to be around women of all shapes, sizes, and shades. It was then that I realized that there was a place for me and all the things about me that made me unique! Once I returned to Houston, I started my brand because I realized how necessary and powerful my voice really was. I had a distinct style and tone—a keen transparency that I felt was missing in my generation. My words speak and they also heal in unconventional ways!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is the road ever easy? Probably not, lol! A lot of the struggles that I faced were internal. I’ve always been so excited watching other people accomplish their dreams, but I doubted my dreams actually happening for me! When you doubt yourself and your capabilities, that tends to manifest in all areas of your life and your business. I would sometimes feel defeated thinking: how is a single mom, with a full-time teaching position, going to have time to produce content? With limited income, how was I supposed to publish books and run my website? If my friends and family aren’t even supporting, then would strangers?
Self-doubt and negative self-talk will have your dreams shattered! Once I abandoned my insecurities and doubt, I affirmed that if my dreams were going to happen then I would have to fight for them. And that’s what I’ve been doing…
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SIL TheWriter story. Tell us more about it.
SIL TheWriter is my creative brand in which I run my blog and house my literary work. In addition to that, I offer proofreading and editing consulting, creative writing assistance, blog contribution, and mobile photography services! If you have a story idea and need someone to bring your words or vision to life… that’s SIL TheWriter!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck! I believe that bad things happen to good people, just as good things do! That’s a part of life, but I believe all the great things that have happened for my business, just affirmed that I am fulfilling my purpose. Any bad things that have happened, just helps me to grow in experience!
