Meet Chris Higham of Higham and Associates in Based in The Montrose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Higham.

Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been involved in the Houston art scene, for about ten years, as a collector, curator, and advocate! Last year, it dawned on me that there was not a web site that promoted Contemporary Houston Artists, exclusively, so decided to develop one. So far, the response has been nothing but great! I also wanted to take the awkwardness that we all feel, when walking into a gallery, for the first time. As we are an internet only gallery, you can peruse the site at your leisure, without feeling nervous. Everyone is aware of the quality of art coming out of New York, LA, and Chicago. It is time that the spotlight moves a little further south.

Has it been a smooth road?
Working with artists offers up its own rewards and challenges. The more experienced artists are easier to deal with, largely because they know what to do, and when to do it. For example, when putting on a group show, you can show an artist their space, and know, come showtime, that their pieces will be professionally hung, and displayed. Most folks have no experience in putting on a pop-up show, but as a wedding, it can take nine months to put together, and then it’s all over in one night.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Higham and Associates – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Our company is a little different because we are an internet only gallery, no bricks, and mortar location. Also, we are promoting nothing but Houston artists. We add two or three artists each month, which helps us maintain viewers that return to see what’s new.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Best thing, the people. Worst thing… is a tie… summer, and the traffic!
