Meet Christy Lynn Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Lynn Lee.

Christy Lynn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was young, I have always had a passion for fashion and art. My parents immigrated from South Korea and ran a small business for over 30 years, so I’ve always been surrounded by a mix of fine arts and business.

My mother has always had an interest in the arts and design but put her dreams aside to pursue a retail business when she came to America. The success of her business helped to support our family and education, and because of her, I was able to pursue my dream in fashion and art.

Throughout my childhood, art and design have always been a focus of my studies. I received my BFA in Fine Arts and Apparel at the Rhode Island School of Design and over the next 12 years had the honor of working for highly acclaimed New York City designers such as Nanette Lepore, Catherine Malandrino, and Elie Tahari.

It wasn’t until moving to Houston, TX in 2018 that I truly felt ready to create a vision for my brand. I was inspired to create my first capsule collection for women who are multifaceted, providing a closet full of timeless and modern pieces that can be worn with an individual style, for any destination. My background and experience have trained my eye for an appreciation of delicate craftsmanship and fine details, which I believe is reflected in the collection. I also vividly remember the years of helping my parents run their small business when I was young and having interactions with customers – being able to provide experience and connect with them through a product.

Houston, TX has so much support for the art and design and it’s exciting to meet so many creatives in this city. It is truly what inspires me to contribute my passion for fashion and design.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve always lived my life thinking of obstacles and challenges as opportunities and I embrace them as they come along on my journey.

One obstacle that I faced when creating my first capsule collection was resetting the way I think about the needs of the fashion industry. When working for bigger companies in NYC for 12 years, it’s easy to get into a mode of focusing only on producing, without really thinking about the consumer. In our world today where everything is so saturated, transparency and originality is very important and is an opportunity to better connect with our customers.

We manufacture all our products out of Brooklyn, New York. While this approach is more costly, we hope to build the product knowledge and understanding of the manufacturing process with our consumers. It’s also great because we can support local jobs and wages. Apart from the glamour, the beauty of the fashion industry is really about the people and the craft and therefore it can be a struggle to balance cost and beauty.

Please tell us about Christy Lynn Collection.
Our company was co-founded by myself, Christy Lee and my husband, Christophe Chung. He is the silent partner that is the financial brains and moral support behind this whole thing! We launched our first collection this year and our product will begin delivery in June 2019. Our design studio is based in Houston, TX and our manufacturing is based out of Brooklyn, NY.

While I pretty much wear almost every hat in this business, since we are so new, I am the Creative Director and Designer of the company and set the direction for the brand. We specialize in women’s collections, everything from dresses, blouses, bottoms, jumpsuits, and skirts. We hope to add in a jacket in the next season! We use 100% silk, fine laces, linens, and embroidery and our fabrics are produced out of Italy, France, and Asia. We are proud to say we support 100% of our garment manufacturing in the United States and really love that we can support local jobs and wages.

The collection is designed with an intention to be worn beautifully while having practicality. Each piece is carefully thought out for our daily lives, whether it’s corporate, leisure, or travel. Each piece can adapt to one’s own style and be worn from day to night.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I currently don’t have any thoughts of starting over differently as we have just recently founded our company, but if I think back to the beginning of my career in New York City, patience is key when starting a career in the fashion industry, and is definitely as important when starting a business. Experience is priceless, so having the patience to grow over time is the key to building experience in any working environment.

  • Our collection ranges from $150 – $600 USD.
