Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Nowlin.
Courtney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I kinda laughed when I read “briefly” walk us through because my story is anything but brief. I am from a small town in South Louisiana and moved to the Houston area with my wife in July of 2018. I am 25 and married to my high school sweetheart. I picked up my first camera when I was in 7th grade. My mom always had some sort of camera around mostly disposables, but it’s when I found her digital camera that everything changed. I would take pictures of everything mostly myself (because I mean I was in 7th grade) and my nieces. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I really pursued my passion. I received my first DSLR, and I thought it was the best thing in the world (and at the time it was to me). I would shoot my friends in our backyard, football games, family photos for close family, I absolutely adored this craft. I was a senior in high school shooting my classmate’s Senior Portraits.
Over the years I’ve spent alot of time perfecting my craft (even though in the photography world, you’ll never be perfect). Since moving to Texas, my business has pretty much taken off. Being from such a small town there were way too many photographers and not enough people to go around. In 2019 alone I’ve booked over 30 weddings in both Texas and Louisiana. I am so incredibly blessed for the opportunities I’ve encountered and the people along the way. This industry is really a dog eat dog world but I truly believe in community over competition.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, this has been one the toughest and most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. Weddings are extremely stressful because you are responsible for capturing someone’s memories that they will look back on forever. If you mess up then you ruin the only thing they have to look back on, a day they cannot get back. My biggest struggle thus far has been getting my name out. There are so many talented photographers and when you see someone with two thousand plus followers, it’s a bit discouraging. When someone has such a big following it almost makes you feel as if you’ll never get there. However, I always tell myself that it doesn’t happen overnight. Patience is something that I lack and something I am learning on my journey.
Please tell us about Nowlens Photography.
Nowlens Photography is a play off of my last name Nowlin. When I married my wife back in 2017 I knew I wanted to change my business name. We got married in April and it took me until December to finally decide on Nowlens. I specialize in Weddings and everything that is included with weddings such as engagement sessions and bridals. I also have a passion for maternity photography. There is something about a pregnant mama that makes my soul so incredibly happy. One of my favorite and first specialties is definitely Senior Portraits. I started out shooting seniors and it’s a love that I’ll never let go of. Though I do not take on nearly as many as I used to, it is something I still take on from time to time. I’ve also been dipping my toes into boudior photography. It’s not something I ever thought I would get into, but I adore it so much.
The empowerment and the emotion that these women go through in front of my lens is incredible. I think I am most known for my style. I’m not “light and airy” yet I’m not a “moody” styled photographer either, I’m more of a happy medium. My proudest moment is almost every wedding that I shoot. Every wedding I feel like is my best until the next one. I’m extremely proud of how far I’ve come to get to where I am, and honestly it’s only the beginning. What sets me apart would have to be my editing style yet again. Almost every client that books with me compliment my editing style and ability to capture such raw unposed emotion.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I wish I could make up some happy and magical story to describe my childhood, but I would be lying. As a child until my teen years, I went through alot of abuse. The detail of that is not important because I’ve overcome all the trauma I’ve gone through. This craft became everything to me at a very young age. It was my escape from the darkness that filled my world. I was able to see beauty in things that were damaged. Because of photography, I was able to find beauty within myself. It was not just a distraction for me, it was my therapy. With that being said my favorite childhood memory would be creating even though back then it was not my career it was what I loved most in the world.
