Meet Derrick Clark of Heirclark in West Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Clark of Heirclark.

Derrick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started the Heirclark imprint in the Summer of 2017. I wanted to build a creative outlet for myself to encourage, influence, and enhance the mindset in a positive way. It started with the clothing and merchandise line HeirclarkGrow.

HeirclarkGrow (www.heirclarkgrow.com) is a merchandise company catered to uplifting people around the world with the t-shirts that encourage people to be more proactive in positivity in their daily routines. Every design that I’ve made is encouraged behind a story, or shall we say, “phase” in my life. With my “No Negativity” Tee being the crowd favorite, it brings me back to a time where we can be our own worse enemies, doubting ourselves, and not having the confidence to breach into our true potential.

A lot of times we get stuck into a cycle not taking care of our mental health that we fall victim to what we allow in our lives, but it is our own responsibility to take ownership and reevaluate our decisions and GROW from everything we endure. After building the HeirclarkGrow brand, I started to venture into cooking. I’ve been cooking seriously for about five years now and love the art behind cooking and plating. I began to post pics of my food in 2014 of various entrees and side dishes. My specialties are Seafood and Steaks. I did my first catering gig in August of 2018 with my famous Filet Oscar. Once I posted the pic on social media it captured a corporate audience that wanted me to cater their Happy Hour event.

From there, the business grew rapidly. I officially named the business HeirclarkCatering in September 2018. I eventually ventured into Private Dinners, Corporate Catering Events, and Food Prep. You are more than welcome to check out my menus at www.heirclarkcatering.com. As the business grew, the demand grew. I had no idea how I would carry around my materials in a car. So I decided to buy my first HeirclarkCatering Van to become more efficient and mobile with my catering service.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a pretty smooth road, and it helps that I love to plan. I’m a firm believer in what God has for you, no human can disrupt His will. In my faith, our lives are written before we are born so whats for you is for you no matter if the market is oversaturated. However, we are still human and sometimes the hardest part about owning your own business is getting over the fear of self-doubt. Everything is unknown, nothing has been measured, and you’re stuck with battling yourself. You’re putting yourself out there to be criticized, analyzed, and recognized. When you are in the artistic realm, you are really showing your thoughts to the world, how you think, and that can be a bit scary because you don’t know the response you are going to receive. But the beauty of it all is that it forces you to confront yourself. Facing your fears. The confrontation builds your confidence as you progress in your craft. As I look back at all of the things, I thought I would’ve done different, or things I failed at, I wouldn’t trade any of those experiences for anything. Failures and losses groom and strengthen you for the next part of the beautiful process.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
