Today we’d like to introduce you to Drum Addick.
Drum, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised on the Southside of Houston in Hiram Clarke, I am the youngest of my siblings, one older sister and one older brother. My parents moved down here from Michigan (in the late 70s so) and they brought their love for music, sports and people with them.
Since my mom was the lead singer of a band and I had to frequently accompany her to many practices, music was no doubt embedded deeply in me. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be in front of a mic performing or in a studio putting the music together for performances.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth and obstacle free journey. I have had many setbacks, roadblocks, and hard times has followed me on my path to happiness in music and life itself. Losing my father in late 2010 to Multiple Myeloma Cancer has been the toughest challenge that I’ve faced in my life while overcoming self-doubt has been the biggest challenge for me musically.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
TMP Muzik Group is a company that specializes in a variety of things in the field of music that range from, Production to writing songs, engineering recording sessions, artist development, branding & marketing and even event planning. I recently finished in the top 9 out of 100+ producers in an event called “Beast of the Beats”, which is ran by a company called Istandard. This event is an end of the year showcase/competition comprised of producers that placed 1-5 in their perspective cities showcases which Istandard has throughout the year (all over the United States and soon to expand out of the country). Although I am currently more focused on Production, I like to think of myself as an artist first because I have an extensive background in the art form of rapping.
I’ve played many roles as a rapper which includes, being featured on Paul Wauls’ Bobby Booshay Color Changin’ Click vol.1 mixtape (#6 under my old rap alias H.P) to being the lead artist in a group that got a lot of local and some regional success (Mask Kracked Affiliates) on down to being the hype man for my childhood friend Diction back when he performed his hit single Birthday Suit ft Slim of 112 (out in Ottawa Canada and while toured).
I am very proud of these things and I feel they set me apart from others that are new to the business and are just realistically learning the ins, outs, do’s and don’ts of the industry all while steady learning myself. I am definitely a student of the game and I will continue to grow while constantly getting better and helping others along the way.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a great city for a musician to thrive in especially one that is always up for the elevation of others. Even with a somewhat over saturation of musicians and studios/home studios popping up there is always room for someone new to make a breakthrough with good music and a pure heart. The only thing I believe that my city can do to improve our current state of the music business is sticking together. I recommend that before anyone starts a business anywhere that they should definitely make sure that they understand the business and know that making an investment sometimes brings good results but sometimes it takes a little longer to see those great ones. As long as they are consistent I believe anyone that starts a business could thrive no matter what the business is because hard work is the key ingredient to success.
