Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth MacLean.
Elizabeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sure. I’m a digital media and communication consultant. I help artists, creative entrepreneurs, and the organizations that support them, develop productive and profitable relationships with their ideal clients. Mostly, it means helping them build, or enhance their presence and reach in the digital world.
I came to this work through a series of winding paths, including several career changes. I got my start in graphic design, and worked as a designer and art director for about 12 years in the U.S. and abroad before transitioning into academia. I spent the next 19 years at The University of Texas at Austin, where I developed and managed academic programs, and pursued graduate studies in media and communication (I earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Radio-TV-Film).
I have a special interest in how the digital age is transforming the arts and culture industries, and creative careers. What most excites me about the work I am involved with now is working closely with individuals and organizations in the arts and culture industries. I firmly believe there has never been a better time for artists and creative professionals, thanks to this hyper-connected environment we live in. The ‘rules of the game’ have changed, and so many more people are now choosing to live and work on their own terms, mainly because technology has made it possible.
Perhaps we are moving toward a new way of living, thinking, creating, and working. In the words of Frances McDormand, “When we include the voices, stories and concerns of people from a wide range of identities and experiences, we gain a better understanding of each other, (and generate) more compassion, more sources of inspiration, and a broader and more brilliant mix of ideas.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been fortunate in life, but of course, there have been difficult times. My multiple career transitions, each of them self-imposed, have required ‘professional reinventions,’ that have tested me in ways I could not have anticipated. One required moving from one country to another with very small children, to a city where I didn’t know anyone.
Like most people, I struggle with fear of failure, so these changes required huge leaps of faith, and have taught me that almost everything can be figured out. Also, like most of my fellow creatives, I struggle with work-life balance issues, mostly because I’m a recovering perfectionist (it’s a work-in-progress!).
EM Consulting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I help my clients make smart decisions about their online presence and digital media strategy and position their creative business for long-term growth. All consulting work is performed exclusively by myself; I do not subcontract or use assistants.
The focus of my services is primarily on digital media, mainly in the areas of web design/development and copywriting. I love working with clients who are launching their online presence, or who have an established presence that doesn’t accurately reflect who they are, or that is not getting their business the results they want.
I also offer related marketing services, including email campaigns, newsletters, surveys, proposals, social media services and more.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was earning my Ph.D. It required so much of me over so many years, while I was working and raising two boys as a single mom. I almost gave up several times, and each time, I found the courage to push ahead with the help and support of family and friends.
My greatest success in my business is being able to provide consistent, quality services to my clients. I will continue to support them as best I can!
