Meet Emily Horn, Wendy McAnally, and Becky Evans of New Horizons Preschool and Therapy Center in Dickinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Horn, Wendy McAnally, and Becky Evans.

Please kick things off for us – we’d love to hear the story.
New Horizons is a new non-profit preschool for children with special needs, founded by sisters Emily Horn and Wendy McAnally, and their mother Becky Evans. We accept all children ages 2-7, regardless of ability. When we started on this journey our hope was to combine all of our unique experiences working with students with special needs into a program that allowed for maximum growth of our students. We took the best of what we learned and combined it into a program that is focused and allows for maximum intervention during the crucial time in a child’s development. Our low student/teacher ratio, along with an intensive, individualized, play based curriculum is the cornerstone to children reaching their full potential. Teachers are highly supported by on-staff speech, occupational, and physical therapists, who work with teachers to implement strategies for students to achieve classroom goals. We also offer a research based music program weekly that the students love! This strong collaboration between teachers, therapists, and parents is working and the successes our students are having supports the importance of team work in educating our children with special needs. Our heart-felt belief is that all children should be provided an environment to learn, grow, and that allows them to reach their maximum potential, regardless of ability.

Has it been a smooth road?
We are struggling with getting the word out to the community that our preschool is open and accepting students.

The reality is that it often costs a lot to provide the intensive program our school offers. Our hope is that our new non-profit status will allow us to obtain grant money in addition to fundraising, to use for scholarships that will allow us to serve more children, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford the kind of intervention that our school offers.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the New Horizons Preschool and Therapy Center story. Tell us more about the business.
New Horizons is a preschool that specializes in the early education of children with special needs. We are a one 0f a kind school in the Bay Area. We accept ALL children ages 2-7 years old, regardless of their abilities. We meet each child where they are in their development and set goals according to the individual. We are passionate about teaching in an environment that is meaningful for the student. Our favorite quote is from Mr. Rogers, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.” As part of our curriculum, on-staff therapists work with teachers to help students achieve goals and their maximum potential. This relationship between teachers and therapists is unique. We are proud of the way our teachers, therapists, and parents work as a team to help our students realize their potential.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our hope is to have a school full of children who are thriving and leaving our care better prepared to make the next step in their educational journey. Our dream would be to have a larger facility in order to accommodate more students.
