Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Francis.
Erin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I established The Career Empress in 2014, after a passion and entrepreneurial mindset merged from several years of assisting individuals in taking their careers to the next level. Resume writing is its own creative medium, and as an experienced entrepreneur, legal writer, and graphic designer, I bring a unique marketing and information design perspective to The Career Empress that helps clients understand how to identify, appeal to and communicate with the right audience. I was always helping family and friends with writing or rewriting their resumes, and I realized that I could reach and help many more people outside of my inner circle.
I have over 23 years of experience in the legal field as a Legal Assistant, which is a key contributor in my technical and legal writing skills. I began my career in Beaumont, Texas, and moved to the Greater Houston Texas area and continued to perfect my craft. As a graduate of Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas (BAAS), I have worked in both the legal and educational field and have assisted job-seekers from entry to executive level in varying industries as well as offered specialized services to harder placed job seekers such as displaced workers, unemployed workers, career changers, workers with a criminal conviction, recent graduates and veterans.
I have always loved helping others achieve their career goals by offering my insight and skillset in helping them break into a competitive job market.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part of being a business owner is learning to balance the business and the actual work product. Being able to deliver your best work at the while continuously marketing and branding and offering your services to the masses can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming. I am learning to outsource some of the administrative tasks.
Despite medical and personal setbacks back to back for 2-3 years of my life, I am proud of myself for never giving up and taking my passion to help others and put into fruition. I battled post-partum depression in 2009 after a difficult pregnancy, diagnosed with a malignant Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor and underwent surgery in 2011. I am now eight years cancer free. After all these challenges, I didn’t break. I rose above the seemingly endless storms and came out stronger, wiser, and more determined to live mine to the fullest. To manifest my dreams of helping others and be a part of others manifesting their dreams is both therapeutic and rewarding for myself.
As a working mother, an entrepreneur a/k/a “mompreneur,” I have had to learn to balance and separate my day job, my business, my mom time, and my personal time. I have learned to stay on schedule and make time and focus on each aspect of my life in order to give each of these the very best of me. I make sure that I leave time for myself to unwind, to refresh, and to zone out and make moments for myself. If I don’t have quiet “me” time, I feel overwhelmed, and I’m not giving the best of myself to those who depend on me daily.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. Beaumont early on became one of the major petrochemical refining areas in the country. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. Beaumont’s population in 2016 was approximately 120,000.
As a child, I wanted to be a teacher — after graduating college in 2002, I briefly taught 8th Grade Reading within the Port Arthur Independent School District. After that year of teaching, I went back into the legal field and currently have over 23 years within the legal field as a Legal Administrative Assistant.
As the youngest of five, I have always been driven, as my mother and siblings set the bar high for me academically, professionally and morally. I’ve always had an interest in helping others — whatever I could do to assist someone that was within my reach I was always willing to do so happily. My mother is probably one of the most giving, humble, caring and loving people that I know and I’d like to think that I’ve taken on some of her amazing attributes and have applied them in my personal and professional life. I specifically have a passion for helping people achieve their dreams, whether it is achieving that dream job or starting a new business. I have an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction when my clients are excited about the work that I deliver to them.
