Meet Flock Holiday and Farah Mithani of HTX Free Art Friday

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flock Holiday and Farah Mithani.

Free Art Friday Houston began in the summer of 2014. It started with Houston artists Black Cassidy @ohnohedint, and Scott Tarbox @tarboxx2. They seen the Free Art movement happening in Austin, and it inspired them to start one here in Houston. It quickly picked up momentum as they began to put out art for free, and encouraged other artists to do so. Artists from all over the city joined in this Free Art movement. As time passed these guys art careers began to take flight causing them to build a team for HTXFAF. They finally assembled a team together and were able to fade out slowly. Flock Holiday runs the social media of HTXFAF, and Farah Mithani coordinates the live events. Flock uses social media to bring awareness to Free Art Friday, and you can catch Farah vending, painting murals, and bringing awareness to HTXFAF in person. Both with the same passion for helping others shine and spreading a positive mindset.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hard part was finding the right team. We had so many people offering up to help in which we were really appreciative of it all. It was the consistency that was lacking. People would help out for a bit then slowly faded out. Everyone had different schedules, families, and different responsibilities. Sometimes posts weren’t starting on time or people were forgetting to post for Free Art Friday. Artist weren’t putting out as much as before. A lot of the times not at all. It was becoming very discouraging. Still, we had to keep pushing forward.

Please tell us about HTX Free Art Friday.
Free Art Friday is a movement happening all over the World. It is a way for artists to give back to their community one art piece at a time. We are here to encourage and inspire artists to set goals, focus in on them, and execute. It’s a good way to challenge yourself to complete a project and put it out there. We want other artists to get together and collaborate with one another. There is a lot of talent in Houston going unrecognized. We want to shed some light onto their gifts so these guys can shine! We don’t want anyone just sitting on their talent feeling discouraged. Our goal is to bring value to those we come in contact with and to motivate. No artist left behind!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always wanted to make people laugh. I loved acting, and I wanted to entertain people somehow. I’ve always been intrigued by people’s talents. There’s just something about watching people flowing in their gifts. I was fortunate to grow up around some super talented people who helped shape the person I am today. It’s important to surround yourself with world shakers and history makers. Not to compare yourself amongst each other, but to lift you up when you’re feeling down.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We just started doing meetups once a month at The Grand Prize Bar. We meet upstairs at 7:30-10:30pm one of the last two Mondays of the month. Just follow us on Instagram @htxfreeartfriday for updates. Farah Mithani is our host and coordinates our live events. It’s a great place to network, ask questions, collaborate, and encourage other artists. Also, walk in with a piece of art, then you have a chance to walk out with someone else’s work of art. It’s not mandatory. It’s just a good way to share our gifts with one another. We’re planning on doing Art shows in the future where the artist are able to keep 100% of their sales. We are still trying to work out those kinks to make that a reality. Stay tuned.
