Meet Kristal M. Johnson of FundJoy in Stafford Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristal M. Johnson.

Kristal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In my last semester of college, I received an internship to work at a local nonprofit organization in the development department. My love of fundraising and making a difference was born. I was eventually assigned the lead on major fundraising campaigns. After completing my initial internship, I was given the opportunity to intern at a local education foundation learning how to write grants and engage funders. I continued to work at local nonprofit organizations until 2011 when I earned my first freelance client. The assignment was to write a grant application and my proposal successfully secured the grant. Today, my company, FundJoy LLC, is a full-service fundraising firm providing funding research, speaking and training services, and fundraising event services.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve learned that the road to business success is never smooth or without obstacles. I have discovered that time and project management is the key to my success and allow me to serve my clients better. I have also found that connecting with a network of entrepreneurs has made a huge difference in my business outlook. It is helpful to have advice on the ups and downs of entrepreneurial endeavors and collaboration as one confronts the challenges of growth.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about FundJoy – what should we know?
My company, FundJoy LLC is a full-service fundraising firm. We help organizations fund, sustain, and grow. I have developed a network of funding researchers who search over 650 funding options every week including bidding opportunities, grants, competitions (small business and entrepreneurial), scholarships, and fellowships. We also offer fundraising training services through FundAcademy, providing workshops, webinars, and customized training for organizations. Through Fundraising Friends, we offer clients coaching leading up to a fundraiser, or we can handle the fundraising event for them. We offer a support network of fundraisers for clients to participate in as well. We are different from other fundraising firms because we specialize in finding all types of funding, usually as soon as they are announced.

How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc?
I define success in several ways. First, I measure success by the results experienced by my clients. Secondly, I measure success by my company’s growth. Finally, my own contentment is an important criteria for success. After this many years in business, I feel like I have hit my rhythm. I understand time management, striving for and attaining goals, and the responsibility of overseeing contractors.

I have had the great privilege of working with Kristal (FundJoy) on behalf of Exalted Arts. Kristal was instrumental in getting our organization prepared for Giving Tuesday 2016. In addition, we purchased her 2017 Grant Guide at the beginning of the year, and I cannot express the number of grants that were applicable to our endeavors. I highly recommend Mrs. Johnson’s services. Her professionalism and knowledge of the funding industry are two components that we at Exalted Arts highly appreciate.
