Meet Gwendolyn Davis of Alexandria Lee Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwendolyn Davis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started after my divorce. I was a 50-year-old woman having to start over. I’d worked in the medical industry for over 25 years, and was tired of the corporate politics of who do we keep, who do we let go. So one morning I just decided I needed a change. I resigned, took my 401k, and went back to school for Fashion Design. It would be the fresh start that I needed, It would make me happy whether I was getting a paycheck or not.

After graduating with a degree in Fashion Design, my first fashion show was May 6, 2014, at Houston Community College. Creating my first five (5) piece bridal collection was the beginning of something so amazing in my life. My next step was to choose a branding name that had a special connection to me. The name of the brand “Alexandria Lee” the middle name of my two youngest grandchildren, Tianna Alexandria, and Jonathan Lee.

After months of brainstorming with Cortney Hall, my junior designer, and business partner. Alexandria Lee Designs was launched in Houston, Texas.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. The most difficult part of this is the segregation in the Fashion Industry here in Houston, Texas. I’m not at all prejudice, however, I find that trying to break into the fashion industry takes more than amazing designs. it takes connections, and unfortunately, a lot of those connections are not open to black designers.

Since in the business I’ve only had one (1) fashion production company that was not African American open it’s door to me.

Of course, ALD will always create opportunities for our business, but we would love to have the support of our Houston Fashion Industry as a whole. It’s troubling when you have a voice in fashion, but not everyone is accepting. I hope this changes soon or else, we, Houston will still be considered a joke in fashion.

My favorite memory from my childhood was visiting my grandmother in the country. Going out to feed the pigs, pick berries for a berry cobbler, and plucking corn from the stalk. Best innocent days ever.
