Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylon Givan.
Jaylon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Whenever I think back to how I started, I am always humbled and re-inspired like never before. As a little boy, I always freely expressed myself through various arts forms, dance just happened to be the exact medicine I needed to carry on. My mom intended to sign me up for her friend, Winston Strickland’s dance company before she passed away years ago. I literally remember her cheering me on to dance every single time great music came on. Although she did not get a chance to sign me up, life will forever have its way. During the time that I was pursuing a basketball career, I also auditioned for a dance company. My very first dance training or class of any sort (outside of my room or school talent shows) was when I joined M.A.D. SKILLZ DANCE COMPANY (MSDC) under the direction of Mr. Strickland. From then on out the rest imprinted in my destiny. Post joining MSDC, I was slowly but surely introduced to other dance techniques beyond Hip-Hop through Jacqueline Lockhart of J. Lockhart Performing Arts Institute, Annie B. Lindsay of Ramsay High School and The Alabama State University (ASU) BFA Dance Program. These safe spaces of love and education were homes and gateways to bountiful, divine self-discovery. Dance will forever have my heart. I don’t know any other language to communicate how I feel and I’m addicted to the worldly change it makes through me.
Today I stand as an artist, educator and most proudly CEO and Founder of Givan You. I’ve been granted many opportunities beyond a few that I previously mentioned. Grateful to have traveled and met people from all over, as well as gain knowledge and memories that will last a lifetime. Through Givan You, I intend to GIVE people opportunity and experience, while fostering them towards becoming their most authentic self. Without God, Faith, Kavin T. Grant, dance, hard work and sacrifice I truly would not be where I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I do not believe that a single soul encounters a smooth journey. The struggles and how one personally overcome them are a huge factor in what makes us unique. Three of my hugest struggles throughout my life were/are my beautiful mom passing early in my life, recovering mentally and physically from injury and my beloved Kavin T. Grant leaving this earth. I am still struggling and grieving day to day over K.T.G. Most times it doesn’t affect me mentally or physically as much as it does emotionally along with how I function or produce. This has been a hurt like never before, but I know that it will make sense one day and that I will gain a strength beyond my imagination.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Givan You – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Givan You LLC is an organization that takes pride in engaging, educating and empowering people internationally. Uniting through love, life, art and giving; our primary focuses are growing and encouraging while creating opportunities for others to do the same. We believe in self-discovery, equality and love in aspects beyond dance.
I am most proud of the effect that Givan You has had on people and the amount of people we have been able to engage. I am happy when I see bodies moving, mouths conversing and smiles/laugh across the room. I believe what sets us apart is my personal life experience that I carry into the room with me and vice versa. The personal life experience that I allow people to have that are in the room colors the overall environment like no other.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, I plan to continue to use my platform to reach people near and far, as I look forward to traveling internationally. I am excited that Givan You will house it’s brand new Houston youth/TEEN company in 2020. There is more to be discovered.
