Meet Jo Ann Bigcas of All About Music and Arts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo Ann Bigcas.

Jo Ann, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I learned to play piano when I was six years old and never stopped learning until my graduation from college where I got my music degree. One day I stopped by a music store owned by Linda Paredes to buy piano books. She asked me if I taught piano. I said yes. She asked me to play a piece which I did. Then she gave me some sheet music to sight read. Little did I know I was auditioning for a job. After that, she offered me a job. I worked there for 7 years, quit for 9 years to raise my family then came back in 2014. In March 2017, I was able to buy this 20-year-old business. I’m glad to do something that I love.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Since it is a 20-year-old business I did not have to start from scratch per se. I inherited the teachers and customers. My challenge was to find financing to buy the business and it came in the form of loans that my brother and sister-in-law took out to help me. My most important challenge is to keep and add more students and to provide the best musical education possible.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We offer music lessons including piano, voice, guitar, violin, and etc. We also offer art lessons. Our lessons are thirty minutes each. We charge $110 for a 4 week month. We have a $40 yearly registration fee. We also have a cafe where we sell snack food. We have a music store where we sell instruments, music books, and accessories. We are a one stop music school. Music lessons, music books, and food all in one place.
