Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Portillo.
Katherine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
During my childhood my mother decided to go back to school for social work. As a single parent of four, and me being the youngest, she had to bring me to her school activities. I loved listening to the lectures and helping her with programs.
As I got older, we would run a program out of the local library called BABES. It was a series that would educate children on drugs and alcohol and provide prevention for those that came from families of addiction. We would help children build their self-esteem and encourage them to strive in life. In addition, volunteering under AmeriCoprs we would create recreation nights for local teens to keep them away from experimenting with drugs and alcohol.
Throughout my high school career, I worked hard to help those in need and I wanted to do that in my professional life. In undergrad, I decided to major in Psychology because I knew I wanted to become a counselor. I completed with a BA in Psychology and moved on to get my Masters in education counseling. Throughout gaining my education I worked at alcohol and drug treatment centers and for a few years at a criminal and family law firm. Upon completion of my Master’s program I decided to get my License in Chemical Dependency Counseling so I can start a practice helping addicts and their families.
I spent two years in New York helping my mother build her practice and learning the ins and outs of business. During that time, I was trained in conducting DWI evaluations and anger assessment. When I left my mother’s practice her business doubled in size with my help. I had such an amazing experience working in a private practice that I decided to open one up here in Houston. I currently share an office and I am building up my business.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are many struggles in a business that is just starting out; like, what are the best ways to market? How can you get more referrals in such a big community while also keeping your expenses low?
In the world of therapy, mental health or addiction counseling, it is sometimes hard to break through the stigma of getting help. Some people think therapy is just for people that have “huge” issues or is on the brink of a loss relationship; when in reality it is not always those issues, sometimes people just need an outside perspective or to vent to someone that is not emotionally connected to them. A counselor is someone that helps you make goals and fulfill them to the best of your ability.
One of my biggest challenges is getting credentialed on the insurance boards. It is a very long and drawn out process. However, when the processes are completed it opens you up to accepting more clients.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think addiction and mental health awareness is important for any city. The more clinicians we have in our city working to help those struggling, the better. By helping one person, it is my belief that we can change a family which then helps the next generation and the community as a whole.
