Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Navarro.
Kathleen, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
First and foremost I want to say thank you to my beautiful mother for supporting me through every phase and chapter of my life, no matter where life has taken me she has been by my side guiding me in the right direction. I grew up in a Jacinto City, TX outside of Downtown Houston with my mom and two siblings. From a young age, I was infatuated with Cinderella. Yes, the Disney princess! I collected her dolls, had themed princess parties, and of course watched Cinderella on VHS religiously. Being raised by a single mother, I felt very responsible for both my older brother, younger sister, and making sure we were all in line to be there for my mother because she never failed to be there for us. It was not always an easy road. I think that I saw myself in Cinderella and always knew that my fate was to live a life where I could impact others, the way she impacted me. Fast forward 21 years, I have made mistakes (who hasn’t?) I have had triumphant moments, began a modeling career, and won the title of Miss Houston Latina 2018. Who would have known? The princess I was looking up to is who I have grown up to be. My journey as Miss Houston Latina has not only helped me in my modeling career, which I enjoy because I am a creative at heart. However, I have found my deepest passion. I always knew I was called to this world to help others, but I did not know how I was going to put that calling into action. Through the title, I have been able to attend various community service events where I get to volunteer my heart away! I walk into those events with the mission to make someone feel so special and so loved, but each time I leave with a face full of tears because my new friends do that for me.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do, why, and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
If you would have asked me this question 6 months ago, I would have said modeling. I love modeling and bringing my visions to life. It is apart of my journey, and I continue to model and have so much fun doing it! Today, I feel that my ultimate art is making other people smile, letting others know that they are not alone in their battles. We all have our story, and we all have been through adversity, but we all also have a purpose as to why we were called to this world. This message is so important because today so many people feel alone in their battles and struggles. I want others to see that if a girl who comes from humble beginnings, has faced many challenges, and messed up at times can do things that were once “impossible,” so can they. No dream is “too big” no mistake is the defining moment of your life; every single one of us can be whoever we want to be and inspire others while doing so!
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Houston is a HUGE growing and thriving city that artists with a vision should be able to thrive too! Some of us are still upcoming and undiscovered artists, but with the help of platforms like this one, we can share our voice with others and keep growing our personal brands. There is room for us all to be successful, and even though sometimes it can feel like we are divided it is vital to remember, we are all one. As one of the largest cities in the country, we can all do our part to make it easier on one another by supporting each other’s passions and careers!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You guys can join me on my journey to self-discovery on my Instagram page where I share not only the pretty moments of my life but sometimes talk (a little bit too much!) on my stories about the tough times as well.
