Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Barnes.
Kristina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story began when I became a single mom, at the age of 15, to a beautiful baby girl. She is now 22 years old and I wouldn’t be where I am today if she wasn’t in my life. I strived daily to provide for her. She has always been my inspiration to be better. My job was and is to always be an example for her. At that time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. All I knew was I needed to put food on the table, clothes on her back and a roof over her head.
At a young age, I wanted to show family and others that life happens and sometimes we don’t make the best choices but, when you set your mind to something, anything is possible. I didn’t have the resources nor the finances but I made it work. Nursing was something I wanted to do but didn’t know much about. I had seen the nurses in the hospital at my daughter’s delivery and observed how amazing their bedside manners were. That was the point when I knew I wanted to be that and help people. My journey began 12 years ago when I was able to go to school full time and graduate with my nursing degree. Since then, I have worked in many different areas of medicine for which I am grateful.
My last nursing position was with Kelsey Sebold in Houston, Texas, in the plastic surgery department with Dr. Yoav Kaufman. In that time, I had seen so many people battling with different skincare conditions. I learned how we need to take care better care of our skin and how trauma to the skin can really affect a person’s self-esteem. Skincare and lash extension became a passion of mine. It wasn’t too long ago that I had the discussion with my boyfriend/business partner that I wanted to go to school to get my Esthetician License and also get Certified to be a Lash Artist. With his support to move forward, I was determined and I finished first in my class and graduated with an “A” grade point average. Now we have a working business called Allure Beauty Bar.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I didn’t come from a business background nor having a business mindset has never been in my nature — until now. I don’t have a degree in marketing or much less did I know how to network. I enjoy interacting with people and have embraced those that have informed me so much about this new career. It hasn’t been a smooth road for me with this new career change. But when I decided to change careers and become an entrepreneur, I knew the journey wasn’t going to be easy. Let me tell you! I’ve definitely had hard days and weeks. I have been very blessed to have the support of my boyfriend and family to keep me motivated. I’ve always been determined with a “I’m not giving up attitude” when it comes to my success or anything I put my mind to.
This is definitely a passion of mine and I want to become very successful in my career. The biggest struggle I’ve had is talking to people in group settings & networking. It’s not because I’m not confident in what I’m doing but I’m actually very shy. Getting out of my comfort zone has been the challenge. Someone once told me that “closed mouths don’t get fed.” The more I’ve opened up about my business and my passion, the more I feel supported and that gives me the drive to keep going. One lesson I learned a long time ago, is that nothing is given to you. If you want it, you have to go and get it! The reward will come but the challenges will arise and I have to be ready to trust in my God with this process. I have to stop comparing myself to others and instead understand that these challenges will only make me stronger and wiser.
Allure Beauty Bar – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is a full-time lash studio called,” Allure Beauty Bar” located in, The Heights of Houston. My studio is very cozy and has a welcoming energy. This is where you get your lash extensions done by, Me. I am a proud certified Lash Artist/ Licensed Esthetician. I love what I do because I get to know my clients on a more personal level. I’ve become a counselor, listener, friend, mentor, etc. What’s moving to me is that I am able to customize each set of lashes, because we are all individually & beautifully made. I am proud to say that my goals and visions came to me, I planned it out and now I am making it happen. This market is not easy when you have so much competition around you. What sets me apart is that I am confident in my skills. I know that some days may not be the greatest but I will not be defeated.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me means being happy with what you love doing. When you love what you do, your energy will show it. Being successful is having an open mind. Learn from other successful business owners and take ideas that you can implement in your business, but in your own way. I think we have to learn to design our own life plans or we can end up climbing up the wrong ladder and pursuing someone else’s version of success. This can leave you with unfulfilled goals. Some of the greatest successes will come from failure but you must not give up. I believe if we pursue someone else’s success, we can end up unhappy, defeated and feeling the opposite: unsuccessful.
In this journey, it’s about keeping a positive and joyful attitude. Those days will come when you just want to throw your hands up. One thing I do know is I am always a student and I can always learn something new every day. To have success it’s important to have a plan, reevaluate if it doesn’t work, stay humble and learn from your mistakes but always have an open mind. There is no easy way but just doing it.
