Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKisha Mosley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us LaKisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a bookstore manager for Barnes & Noble and had gotten laid off. I had just planned my 5th year wedding anniversary and had a blast doing it. I decided to take the contacts that I had acquired and start my own event planning business. It took me a month to come up with a name and get all my legal paperwork completed. I officially launched my business in August 2012 and attended my first vendor show. At that show, I booked my first 2 clients. By the end of that first year, I had 5 new clients for 2013. Weddings were my niche however I’ve done bridal showers, baby showers, fashion shows and corporate events.
In 2015, after a being a guest speaker on a conference call about event planning, I decided to start The Aspiring Planner which is a training platform for those individuals wanting to start their own event planning business. It started with a series of conference calls and workshops. Now it’s evolved into online courses and one day intensives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth at all!!
The main struggle I had was finding the right partnerships. I’ve had two partners in business and they just didn’t seem to work out. There was always one of us with more drive than the other. After the last failed partnership, I decided to just be a solopreneur and grow my businesses that way.
Time management and finances have also been a struggle. When you first start, you want to do everything and be so accommodating to everyone. You also don’t realize your value and you tend to undercharge to get clients. It’s hard to talk pricing sometimes but if clients do not pay you what you are worth you tend to overwork yourself and get extremely frustrated.
To be an event planner, you must be extremely organized to be able to handle multiple clients. If you are a mother or a wife you have to balance home life and business effectively so that nothing gets left behind.
