Meet Lani Dolifka of Watermill Express

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lani Dolifka.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I used to live near a designated Superfund site which is land that has been contaminated by hazardous waste and qualifies for EPA cleanup. The community’s groundwater contained 600 documented chemicals and we were told not to drink our tap water, leaving us to rely on alternative sources for our water like expensive plastic water bottles.

Because of these issues, my husband and I, with the help of our family and friends, developed a miniature water purification kiosk that took municipal water and produced high quality drinking water. The result was our first Watermill Express station that produced pure drinking water at an affordable price. That was a little over 30 years ago. Now, we’ve grown to have more than 1,300 locations across the country.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve found that the most worthwhile journeys are never smooth and while there were bumps along the way – not having enough money in our bank account to cover expenses, seemingly never-ending work hours, making tough but necessary business decisions – every challenge we’ve encountered has made us more resilient and more determined to succeed.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Watermill Express – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Watermill Express is the largest drive-up pure drinking water and ice company in the nation and the green alternative to prepackaged water. Our customers supply their own refillable containers and drive up to the station to purchase water and ice at a fraction of the price they would pay at the store. In addition to providing pure drinking water, we now offer Waterocks® Ice at select locations, which is made from our pure drinking water.

What sets us apart from other companies is our amazing staff. Plus, we have the most sophisticated water purification system available. We’ve developed our own remote software so that we can monitor equipment performance 24-hours. Our “last mile” technology addresses unregulated contaminants.

Also, every year I attend our annual 4th Grade Healthy Habits Writing Contest, and our Guppy Tank Contest, held in the Rio Grande Valley. I am able to see the impact Watermill Express has on area kids. Additionally, last year we donated over 100 million gallons of clean water to the developing world through World Vision. We also launched the largest social media campaign for safe water awareness in the United States through our Clean Water Here initiative, where we reached over 750 million people to raise awareness for safe drinking water in the United States.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love Houston, its culture and its people. It’s a treat to be able to bring pure water and ice to families in the area.

  • One gallon of water in Houston ranges from $.25 – $.35
  • Ten pounds of ice ranges from $.75 – $1.25
