Meet Laurie Coton of Consilium Home in Uptown and Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Coton.

Laurie serves as the President & Creative Director of Consilium Home & Office. Prior to leading Consilium, Laurie founded Laurie Coton Designs, for which she was the principal Designer for over 15 years.

She is a native Texan and third generation Houstonian who has worked and lived in the Inner Loop for over 25 years. When Laurie was a new mom, she began flipping houses to bring in income and still allow a flexible work schedule to be with her young son. With interest in both the real estate transactions and the design aspect of refurbishing the homes, Laurie’s contracting evolved into a professional career as both a top-producing Real Estate Agent and a formally-trained, ASID accredited Interior Designer.

Laurie holds degrees in Interior Design from the Art Institute of Houston and a BBA in Marketing from the University of Texas.

With experience in both industries and a strong focus on Interior Design, Laurie has a unique perspective on finding a house and making it a home. Laurie has incomparable expertise of the city’s trade resources and evolving styles. With a trusted team by her side, along with her warm, charismatic style, Laurie is able to provide personal attention to every Client.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is anything worth doing ever a smooth road? I have faced challenges and obstacles, learned from mistakes, and dealt with problems that arise from different personalities and technology changes. You learn from these and use them to get better at what you do.

Consilium Home – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Having been in the industry for 20 years, I have taken Consilium Home in a different direction. We have a fresh approach when it comes to current trends and interior design. In the past, we focused on transitional and traditional interiors but the atmosphere is changing in Houston. Many of our projects come from realtors and builders and their referrals. These clients are well traveled and from all over the world, hence, we have been creating more contemporary looks with a turnkey approach in homes from high rises to vacation homes.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It is hard to narrow what I am most proud of. When looking at the pictures from a finished project, I’m proud to see what’s been created but I am also proud of the relationship that has been formed with the client. Proud to see how they will use the space and how it will benefit them.
