Today we’d like to introduce you to Loris Simon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Loris. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Literally Short Film Festival stems off of Literal Magazine, which is a cultural house based in the US and Mexico. The director, Rose Mary, and I had been brainstorming about how we could include more film in Literal. We had thought about creating a short film award for some time, so we decided to give it a try in 2014. We opened our call for submissions internationally and only awarded and screened three films. Back then we called it Literally Short Film Awards. It was a total success and we sold out tickets.
Needless to say, we all had a great time. It was a no brainer to do it again the following year. The second time, we brought the event to our own venue and screened three programs (about 15-20 films). We also added an art exhibition, a workshop and other activities. From then on it kept growing. Our last edition (celebrating its 6th year), we received a bit over 400 submissions and screened 33 films from every corner of the globe. It’s been a very fun job, to say the least!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like anything else, working on the festival has had its obstacles. Houston is a very wide city, and it’s big on oil & gas companies; it’s always a challenge to help film buffs find out about the festival. We definitely work on that.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Literally Short Film Festival – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the founder and co-director of Literally Short Film. I feel most proud about running the festival and seeing how much it’s grown since its inception. I would think that what sets me apart from others is a combination of my international background, my passion and my deep involvement in what I do.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to the “day by day.” There are definitely plans for the future, but I enjoy the process just as much as the end goal. There’s a special excitement that begins accumulating at the beginning of every season until the very last day of the festival. Every year is different and we cater it to the types of films we receive, so we never know what’s in store for us!
