Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquita McCoy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I actually stumbled upon my business as a result of trying to create a remedy for my own puffy eyes. I tried many expensive products as well as some DIY options. I finally put together a successful option: my now Green Tea Infused Eye Masks. I wanted to use something natural if this was something that I would be using often. I then decided that other people could benefit from my creation and I was correct after testing on other people. Months later Earthen Escapes was born. I realized that I could help to educate both women and men on how to achieve healthy skin by using ingredients that were probably already in their kitchen.
Has it been a smooth road?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. It’s been curvy and bumpy. I have had to determine my ideal client, TRY and master social media with its ever-changing algorithms (Still haven’t conquered this), know how to market to the correct audience and simply balance my 9 to 5 with Earthen Escapes. My brain is always grinding and it can be a struggle to turn it off. I must say that I’ve enjoyed every bit of it though. Flaws and all!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Earthen Escapes story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is a small business that was created to simply educate people on how to care for their skin using natural products/ingredients. Because our skin is so important, many go to great lengths and will desperately use ANYTHING on their skin in an effort to improve it. But that’s so not necessary. All of my products are specially formulated to target common skin problems such as dark circles, puffy eyes, oily/dry/combination skin types, evening the skin tone, hyperpigmentation and acne. I take pride in each and every one of products because I hand make each one in small batches. I use all natural, quality ingredients that you can actually pronounce. I’m not some big fancy company that makes overnight, miracle claims, but my products are highly effective if used consistently and appropriately. I am most proud of the response that I get from customers and the gratitude that they show as a result of my giving them a multitude of skincare tips and tricks. I most enjoy that.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’m simply living in the moment and enjoying the current successes. Thinking bigger: I would like to have a store front property in the Houston area. I am also working on expanding my product line to include a full skincare system.
